The Unholy

I am pretty much willing to give anything with Jeffery Dean Morgan in it a chance and I have enjoyed his work in horror movies before. The Unholy which is a directorial debut for Evan Spiliotopoulos is one of the most underrated and “hidden gem” horror movies I have seen over the last couple of years. This is one that I highly recommend for horror fans give a chance.

The Movie Review

We get a really cool opening in this movie which shows us a woman called Mary Elanor being hanged after being suspected of being a witch back in the Salem Witch trials days. It is a pretty awesome opening that gets you pumped and invested in the story that is about to unfold.

As the movie jumps to modern times, we see journalist, Gerry Fenn who was caught making up false stories to report and now works reporting jobs that are seen as a joke. He has to report on the strange and weird and this latest tip he has brought him to the place where Mary Elanor was hanged.

It is here that he comes across a lovely girl called Alice that is deaf. However, Alice starts to be able to hear, talk, and also heal other people and she claims she can do this thanks to a gift from The Virgin Mary. Gerry sensing that there is something “real” happening here decides to stick around and see what is really going on.

As Alice performs more and more miracles, Gerry starts to think that something is up and even the Church sends someone to investigate. It is here that we find out that these miracles that Alice is performing may not be the work of God after all! While you kind of get a sense of what is going on pretty early on in The Unholy, it still has some excellent twists.

The whole movie had me invested pretty much right from the start and I was more and more engrossed as it went on. What these miracles really are and how they are being performed is revealed in a tremendous way and it features an amazing ending that had me on the edge of my seat.

I know that some may argue that parts of the movie are predictable and I can get with that line of thinking. However, I will say that there will still be more than a few things that happen here which will shock you. You may think that as there are twists and turns to this story it will be a one-and-done kind of film, but I could see myself and the wife watching this again and still really enjoying it.

If you want a fun and creepy horror movie, The Unholy is a movie that I am certain you will have a fun time with. It has a very intriguing plot and you do actually care about the main characters and want to find out what is really going on here. I picked this up for under ten British pounds on Amazon and I feel like it was one of the best deals I have gotten on a Blu-Ray in a very long time!
