I pretty much had zero expectations when it came to Thelma, but this was a fun and charming comedy drama about a very senior citizen who refuses to be scammed. I am not sure it is the kind of movie I would be desperate to watch again, but during the rather brisk 90 minute runtime, I was entertained and wondering how the heck it was going to end.

The Movie Review: June Squibb Shines as Thelma
I was scrolling, looking for something to watch, and Sheldon’s meemaw, June Squibb popped up and I scrolled back to confirm it was her. Well, I say Sheldon’s meemaw, but it is the one from The Big Bang Theory, not Young Sheldon. Anyway, after confirming it was her, I looked at the movie and thought that it sounded like it could be fun.
A Genre-Bending Story of Comedy and Drama
After reading the synopsis and even 10 or so minutes in, I was not certain if this was a comedy or a drama. After watching it, I would say that it is somewhere in the middle, but certainly leaning a little bit more towards drama. If you do have elderly relatives, I am sure there are a few things that you will be able to relate to here.
The main character is 93 year old Thelma. Thelma lives on her own, but her grandson Danny often visits and while she loves him, she can find him overbearing sometimes. Thelma ends up being the victim of a scam, a scam that tricks her out of 10 grand! This is quite a fitting thing as there are way too many older people getting scammed over the phone and online and this is basically what this movie is about.
A Determined Thelma Takes Matters Into Her Own Hands
However, while the cops are useless, Thelma decides that she is not going to let this be! Thelma finds out the address of the person who has scammed her and decides that she is going to get her money back. What is interesting here is that you may be expecting an over the top action comedy with this old lady doing all kinds of crazy stuff, but that is not the case at all.
Thelma for the most part plays things very straight. She is not some super old lady, she is pretty much grounded in reality and she has the troubles you would expect a senior citizen would. However, she also has a very stubborn attitude and she even enlists the “help” of a few friends, including an estranged friend of hers and her late husbands who she basically uses for his fancy mobility scooter.
A Deeper Story Beyond Thelma’s Quest
While Thelma trying to get her money back is the core of what is going on here. We also have other stuff with her grandson Danny trying to find his purpose in life and even the scammer coming to terms with how their life is too. The thing with Thelma is that it is not the kind of movie that is going to blow you away or even the kind of movie you will remember in great detail a year later, but it is fun and entertaining while it lasts. If you are looking for something fun and a little different, give Thelma a try.
