The Film Review
Released on 13th November 1999, Toy Story 2 continues the story as we get to see Buzz and Woody as best friends living together in peace. One day, Woody gets left behind by Andy. This happens as a result of his arm being torn off, where he fears that he will get thrown away by Andy eventually.
The next day, Woody, in an effort to save his fellow toy from being sold in a yard sale, gets kidnapped by a greedy toy collector named Al McWhiggin who plans on selling him to a museum in Japan.
Meanwhile, Buzz and the others reach Al’s toy shop to rescue Woody but Woody refuses to go back as a result of being brainwashed by Stinky Pete who makes Woody believe that all toys eventually end up in a garbage bin.
Eventually, Woody decides to go back but is suddenly stopped and attacked by Stinky Pete who forcefully prevents him from leaving. Woody and the gang must now work together to take on Stinky Pete and protect Woody’s other friends, Jessie and Bullseye, from being transported to Japan through a plane.
Toy Story 2 reunited the same creative team that gave success to its previous edition. Although one of the reasons for Toy Story’s major success was due to the Oscar-winning veteran actor, Tom Hanks, one cannot deny the efforts that were made by the creative team which made the film achieve what it did.
However, this time, Pixar concentrated on coming up with a concrete story rather than making big changes to the graphical designs. According to the president of Walt Disney feature animation, Thomas Schumacher, the filmmakers were able to focus on the main storyline as they did not want to recreate a similar plot with better graphics as it would ultimately lead to failure.
Schumacher further revealed that the characters were already there pre-produced, they just needed to be placed and moved correctly according to the developed storyline.
Apart from that, minor changes related to the animation were also made to the overall Toy Story world and the environment. Thanks to the advancements made in technology, animators were able to get complexed camera shots throughout the film. Numerous pieces of software were also developed which added textural details to the character of Woody, particularly in a scene where he was getting his arm sewn by the toy repair specialist.
The original Toy Story 2 soundtracks were written by Randy Newman. The soundtrack called When She Loved Me was also nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Original Song.
Overall, Toy Story 2 has been a massive success as it grossed over $497 million at the box office. The film became a standard upon which future animated films could be measured. The story is meaningful, the animation is well-done, and the action is intense, which altogether make the film brilliant to watch.
