It is crazy when you think about for how long the Uncharted movie has been supposed to be happening. Mark Wahlberg was originally going to be Nathan Drake, but the movie was stuck in development so long he aged out of the role. I have to say, I am kind of glad as Tom Holland really was awesome as Nathan Drake.

The Movie Review
Uncharted was brought to us by director Ruben Fleischer and from start to end I was entertained. Uncharted I feel is the first step of Sony trying to take many of their big video game properties and turn them into movies. The reason I say this is before the movie, we got an MCU-style PlayStation intro showcasing some of their biggest titles such as God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn, both of which I think would make excellent movies.
Anyway, let’s get back to the movie at hand, Uncharted. Nathan Drake and his brother Sam, live in an orphanage and have dreams of finding this long-lost Spanish treasure. Eventually, Nate ends up on his own as Sam runs away from the law and Nate spends his early adulthood pulling small-time heists and grifts to get by.
I will admit that I felt Tom Holland was perhaps too young to be Nathan Drake. However, he really does nail this role. Nate soon meets up with Victor Sullivan, Sully, played by Mark Wahlberg who knew Sam and says that he can help Nate find the long-lost gold and his brother in the process.
Nate and Sully’s adventure is not exactly easy. Their treasure hunt is made complicated by Antonio Banderas as Santiago Moncada who sees the gold as his birthright and his “muscle” Jo Braddock who leads a team of mercenaries. As someone who loves the games, I was surprised to see the movie ignore the character Elena in favor of introducing Chloe (Sophia Ali) instead. Chloe is a fantastic character too and she and Nate have some excellent chemistry.
The movie is an action and adventure tale that is just so much fun. Tom Holland is excellent as Nathan Drake; I cannot praise his performance enough. Even the way he jumps and moves looks like it was taken straight out of the games.
Now speaking of the games, I am so glad that the movie is not just a retelling of the games. The Uncharted movie takes elements from the first four games of the series and uses them to tell its own tale. As a huge fan of the games, I am more than happy with the story that was told here.
I would have to say that this is one of the best games to movie adaptations we have had. It had enough elements from the games to give a nod to players, but at the same time, you do not need to have played a single Uncharted game to enjoy this movie. My wife has not played a single second of the Uncharted games and she loved this movie.
I would say that it is kind of like the National Treasure, Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones movies all rolled into one. I know that we are early in 2022, but this has a very high chance of making my movies of the year list. Do not miss out on this, it really is a fun movie, and a movie I hope does well so we can get a sequel!
