I was so pumped to see Verity! Right up until the moment I sat in my seat at the theatre, I was convinced that this was going to be an amazing movie! The trailers that I saw for this did a fantastic job of selling the movie as some kind of erotic thriller, and they did not give a ton away. Actually, speaking of erotic thrillers, I had heard some say that this movie was bringing it back, which I thought was weird, as I never thought the genre went away.

The Movie Review: High Hopes and a Star-Studded Cast
It was not just the slick and stylish trailer that got me interested in Verity. The cast was also very good. We have Anne Hathaway playing the role of a famous author called Verity Crawford, Josh Hartnett as her husband Jeremy, and Dakota Johnson as another author called Lowen. This is a great small cast, and from the trailers, it looked like they all were going to nail it.
The Intriguing Premise: Ghostwriting and Secrets
Verity is a bestselling author. However, there is an accident, and Verity is left in a catatonic state, and this leads to Jeremy hiring Lowen to finish Verity’s latest book. Lowen is not a successful author, but she does have a very similar style of writing to Verity, so it is felt that she is going to be able to finish the book in the best way possible.
We see parts of this in the trailer for sure. The twist of the trailer was there to see clear as day, is Verity really catatonic, or is there something more sinister at play here? As a premise, I thought that this was fantastic, and I felt that our two leading ladies would be able to pull off this kind of story perfectly, and I was expecting a very tense and nerve-racking kind of thriller.
Where It Falls Flat: Forced Romance and Pacing Issues
The thing is, that is not the main point of the movie! No spoilers here, but Lowen is trying to put together this book and gets a window into the life of Verity and, of course, starts a thing up with Jeremy. Ugh, this was not the worst movie I have ever seen, but it was just so boring! This movie clocks in at nearly two hours, and it honestly felt like it was nearly three. There is some sexy scenes in the movie, but it all feels really forced, and while I love the cast, it is like they are just going through the motions, especially Dakota Johnson, whose character seems bored for most of the movie!
Final Verdict: A Major Disappointment
It is probably a good thing I did go and see Verity in the theatre. If I were watching this on streaming, I think there is a high chance I would have turned it off after an hour or so; that is how bored I was. Yes, we have a great cast, and they do have a solid premise for a story, but they focus on the wrong things, and it just takes an age to get to where it is going. The thing is, even when this hits streaming, which it may have by the time you read this. I have zero desire to give this another try. So far, as I write this, Verity is probably my most disappointing movie of the year.
