The Film Review
The movie presents a story based on animated video game characters in an arcade. After the arcade closes, these characters come to life in order to socialize with each other. The film focuses on Ralph who plays a bad guy in a video game called Fix-It Felix. Due to his role, Ralph becomes socially isolated and in an attempt to win the hearts of the other video game characters, he travels to another video game in order to win a medal.
On his journey to win the medal in the game, Ralph e accidentally sets off a Cy-Bug: a virus-like character which adapts to the environment only to consume it till it is no more. Ralph, along with this friend Vanellope Von Schweetz, must now work together to disable the Cy-Bug as it poses a threat to completely wipe out all the games in the arcade.
The concept of Wreck-It Ralph was first developed in the 1980s, but the filmmakers only improvised this idea in 2011. Similar to other animated films like Toy Story, Wreck-it Ralph also contains numerous cameos from licensed video game characters.
The film is like a video game crossover where characters like Clyde, Pac-Man, Eggman, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Bowser from Super Mario Bros. make random appearances in the different arcade games.
Director Moore wanted to make sure that all these characters were represented in their original persona, so he contacted all the companies and made sure that the characters animated appeared with their consent.
The film was the first for Disney in which they applied the concept of bidirectional reflectance distribution functions which included realistic reflections of characters on the surface and virtual cinematography camera capture system which made it possible to move through scenes discreetly. The production team also went as far as bringing in food photographers to make sure that the food in the film appealed to the viewers.
The film’s main soundtrack was composed by Henry Jackman whereas, it also featured original songs by Skrillex and Owl City called Bug Hunt and When Can I See You Again.
Moving on, the film has been a hit as it earned over $470 million on the box office and also won numerous awards. Critics believed that the whole idea of a film relating to an arcade with video game characters was indigenous. Even the cameos were a brilliant topping but what made all the difference was the script. Many claimed that if it wasn’t for the weak script, Wreck-It Ralphs could have become the next Toy Story series with all the similar ideas and animation used by Disney. Some parents have also argued that the intense action scenes made it difficult to watch the film with kids who are under 8 years old because of the violence involved.
Overall, Wreck-It Ralph is a brilliantly produced film which holds all the essential ingredients, making it a treat to watch for both the kids and the adults.
