Coming just a year after the fourth entry, you have to give them a lot of credit for making Wrong Turn a yearly franchise for a while. Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines is perhaps the craziest of all the movies so far. What we have here is a “pre-sequel” – it is a sequel to Wrong Turn 4, but that also means that it is a prequel to the original Wrong Turn.

The Movie Review
The Setting of Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines
Set after Three Finger, Saw Tooth, and One Eye’s brutal evisceration of those college kids at the asylum in Wrong Turn 4. Our three hillbilly cannibals have found themselves in the city of Fair Lake which is in West Virginia, which if you remember, was the woods of West Virginia where the original Wrong Turn was set.
The New Characters
Our “heroes” in the movie are five young people who are making their way to Fair Lake for a big music festival that is taking place there. We have Billy and Cruz who are a couple, and Gus and Lita who are also a couple and they are joined by another guy called Julian. Much like the last movie, these characters are ok, but you never feel too attached to them.
The Plot Twist
On their way to this music festival, they nearly run down an old guy called Maynard Odets who freaks out and attacks them, they get into a big scuffle and Sherrif Angela Carter along with her deputy shows up. Sherrif Carter arrests them all and takes them to the police station.
The Horror Unfolds in Fair Lake
Here, Billy manages to convince the Sherrif to let his friends go so only he and old man Maynard are left in jail. Of course, Three Finger, Saw Tooth, and One Eye show up and start stalking the town. No spoilers here, but you find out they have a connection to Maynard and he warns the Sherrif that if she does not let him go, they will come for him and everyone will die!
Sherrif Carter: A Key Character in Wrong Turn 5
While the five young people coming to this city were not all that great, Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines has one of the better protagonists in the series – Sherrif Carter. I really liked this character, you wanted her to survive and take down these crazy ass cannibals, but the problem with this being a prequel is that you knew it was not going to go that way.
The Unique Tone of the Film
With this movie, I got the impression that they were having a bit more fun with it. Yes, there are some brutal kills here, but there is a bit of a sense of humor about some of them. I would liken it to the way when Chucky or Freddy would brutally kill someone, but as well as making you wince and gross you out with the blood, you get a bit of a chuckle out of it as well.
The Town Setting
One thing that Wrong Turn 4 and Wrong Turn 5 did that was interesting was take the inbred hillbillies out of the woods. The town setting here is great, even though it does look like a movie set for most of it. To be honest, it very well could be a real town in some shots, but it has a very artificial look to it. It is not bad, but it is something I always notice when I watch it.
Conclusion
I do like Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines. It has a kind of a different feel about it to the previous movies and Maynard and Sherrif Carter were two characters that I really liked. To be fair, for me, I enjoyed Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings so much that this had a lot to live up to.
