Side to Side peaked on number 4 at the US Billboard Hot 100 as well as the UK Singles Chart. Apart from that, it also broke into the top 10 barrier of many countries including Australia, Canada, Israel, Lebanon, Portugal, Scotland, and Norway.
It is also certified as quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The song was officially released on 30th August 2016 and is available to play through digital download.
The song was first announced through Grande’s Instagram account where she posted a teaser for her new upcoming song. Typically, the lyrics feature Grande’s pop themed background music and voice, with rapping at the second half by Minaj.
Side to Side: the Lyrics
In relation to the lyrics of the song, it is often claimed that Side to Side describes a feeling of numbness that occurs after a sexual encounter with an individual. Grande, in an interview, vaguely explained how the lyrics basically describe the soreness that occurs after riding.
The song begins with Grande describing how she has been hanging out with this boy day and night. Initially, she portrays her feeling of wanting to be with her despite knowing that she already has a bad reputation. In the pre-chorus build up, she talks about defying the advice of her friends who ask her to leave him for good.
The main chorus then kicks in with Grande singing as to how this boy has her walking side to side in the following manner: “I’ve been here all night, I’ve been here all day, and boy, got me walkin’ side to side”.
Right after the chorus verses end, she begins to sing about becoming intimate with him despite knowing how this can lead to a lot of issues for her.
Minaj follows up Grande’s theme and adds her own essential rap into the mix. As per Minaj’s usual style, she boasts of being the best rapper in the business, calling herself the Queen of Rap. At the same time, she also praises Grande for being on top when it comes to the pop genre.
The Video
The music video initially features Grande riding gym bicycles with a number of background performers as she synchronizes her movements with the beat of the song.
Other gym scenes are also included where performers can be seen lifting weights and generally working out. In the second half, Minaj makes her appearance in what seems to be a sauna room, with a number of male performers. Grande soon joins her as the duo then can be seen singing as they shower in their lingerie.
In between the sequence, a cheerful light moment is also shared as Grande whispers something into the ears of Minaj. The music video ends with the duo posing together with the background performers as the music fades out.
