The Song Review
Both Rihanna and Harris secured their positions of being top-notch artists with this song. This is what you came for is the perfect beat for both summer and spring. The tune is just damn fine and is ideal to dance to, on any evening. It stood at the No. 2 spot on the UK Singles Chart. Besides that, it took the No. 3 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 Songs Chart. Plus, the song was at No. 1 on the Hot Dance & Electronic Songs. It went on to sell over 1.2 million copies across the US.
There is Nothing New, But!
Despite its commercial success, the song received highly mixed reviews. Many were disappointed by the video, and others called it okay. However, still, the song pulled the right chords. It is a high-quality EDM which decent vocals and tunes. Both Calvin and Rihanna are well in the game.
Rihanna’s & Calvin’s Supremacy Continues!
Well, we observed that there is nothing new in the song. There is sound progress or nothing new by both artists. However, that does not mean they failed to make a mark. They did it finely, just as they do, and we are okay with it. Why change the old but gold method. A winning method continues to leave us awestruck every single time.
Who Wrote It & Who is Nils Sjoberg?
Two powerhouses wrote the exceptional lyrics for this is what you came for. One is Calvin Harris, and another one is Nils Sjoberg. Who is this person!
Well, you will be shocked to know that it is none other than Taylor Swift, America’s Sweetheart. Yes! Taylor wrote the song along with Calvin Harris. Her identity was initially masked. For this, she was credited with the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg.
Taylor even lend her backing vocals to the song that were uncredited. What makes it interesting is that Taylor and Calvin were dating at that time. The sole purpose behind hiding Taylor’s identity was to prevent the song from being overshadowed by their relationship. Speculations arose at that time. After the release, Calvin confirmed on Twitter that it was Taylor Swift. He also revealed that it was Taylor who requested the secrecy.
Music Video: A Dynamic Take
The music video received mixed reviews. It was directed by Emil Nava. The video is simply jaw-dropping.
In the video, a big white box or cubicle is a constant in the whole video. Rihanna is dressed gracefully in a shimmering blue jumpsuit. She is singing and dancing in that huge white box.
Out of the blue, graphics take a dynamic turn in the video. Now, there are laser projections with after effects and FX. After that, a series of graphical scenes follow. These include lightning over a mountain, running horses, and a party. The well-blended effects take the viewers in a 3D environment.
Calvin makes a cameo with a Lamborghini. The video concludes with Rihanna walking out of the box, which is now left in a dark and deserted place.
Music Composition
This song is a pure EDM. Billboard wrote about it, “A chilled out, joyful club track that nods to classic Chicago house, from the late 1980s and the early 1990s, but with a modern, poppier flavor”.
What do you think about it!
