The Song Review
Shaky Shaky – the Video
We are immediately greeted with a few background dancers surrounded by Daddy Yankee. They appear to be standing in a parking structure. Dressed in fitted black leather crop-tops and shorts, the women begin performing hip hop moves while Daddy Yankee sings. The camera zooms in on each of the dancers, tracing their outfits and appearance.
It seems the dance routine becomes popular when music listeners start mimicking the moves in their homes, kitchens, or at the beach. Four paid actors perform the same dance moves in the middle of a traffic intersection, halting the cars with their behinds shaking. The women are very easy to spot since they are vibrant colors with neon tank tops and jean shorts.
Multiple dance routines are introduced through the music video that involves flipping the hair, bending over and shaking your behind, and other enticing steps. These moves are later performed by the viewers to continue with the theme. The video concludes with the same parking lot setting since it appears the majority of the video is shot there.

About the Artist
Daddy Yankee was born in February 1977 as Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez. He was welcomed in Rio Piedras, a bustling sector in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His mother was a manicurist at the time while struggling to build her own music career. Ramon’s father was a bongosero or a salsa percussionist.
Ramon also had a brother, Nomar. The two spent a lot of childhood playing music and singing together. They would perform shows for the family at 13 when Ramon started to rap. However, his lyrics were very improvised at the time, having just started.
As time went on, Ramon became more interested in reggaeton music. He would sing and study the Spanish language, focusing on singers such as DJ Playero, DJ Drako, and Vico C. The music he was interested in was not popular, which he wanted to change. However, San Juan DJs would combine freestyle with reggaeton and hip hop at the local level, a personal favorite of Daddy Yankee.
During his teen years, he started taking an interest in sports with his dream of becoming a basketball player. Unfortunately, on his way to practice one day, he was shot with two bullets from an AK-47. He had unexpectedly walked the route of a gang shooting. The incident ruined his dreams of being signed with the Seattle Mariners.
While Daddy Yankee was healing, he decided to focus on music and relationships around him instead. At the time of the incident, he was already working with DJ Playero. Daddy Yankee was a featured credit in Playero 37, a mixtape in 1992. We can safely say his dream of becoming a musician was not entirely far off.
Playero personally worked with him the next three years to release Daddy Yankee’s first solo mixtape, No Mercy, through BM Records and Lion Records. However, the album had controversial lyrics, so the government banned the distribution. Nonetheless, the release granted him a decent level of fame and success.
