The Song Review
El Perdón— Nicky Jam y Enrique Iglesias backstory
Nicky Jam had started working with Daddy Yankee in the late 1990s. The duo had formed the band Los Cangris which released a few albums and multiple songs while working together. He was building his own identity as an upcoming reggaeton artist.
However, in 2004, Nicky Jam stopped collaborating with Daddy Yankee to focus on himself as a solo artist. Unfortunately, his career took a silent turn. Nicky Jam suffered from a musician’s bloc, which made him unable to create music.
As his music was continuously declining, Nicky Jam moved to Medellin, Colombia, for a shift of scenery. He took his time learning more about himself and his talent. Nicky Jam discovered what pushed him to pursue a career in music, which led to writing El Perdón.
The song features fellow-artist Enrique Iglesias. The song surprisingly placed first in the top 100. El Pardon was a massive hit in Spanish-speaking countries, with multiple Latin charts mentions. Suffice to say; El Perdón put Nicky Jam on the right track.
Nicky Jam has admitted that most people associate reggaeton with lyrics about sex, lust, and drugs. However, El Perdón is a long song about discovering the inner-happiness. It relates to a period in your life where you felt helpless, but you find something that makes you happy with dedication.
The stance of the song is also represented by the light-hearted joyful music. However, the lyrics describe a disheartening period in life ravaged by hopelessness and sadness.
When Nicky Jam had moved to Columbia, he was writing a few songs. However, when he began the chorus, the artist knew when El Perdón was the song. He immediately called his producer and asked him to produce a beat with a romanticized feeling. It was a gut feeling which resulted in El Pardon being on the Hot 100 songs for six months straight.
El Perdón – Nicky Jam y Enrique Iglesias Video Interpretation
Nicky Jam and Enrique Iglesias walk a congested neighborhood in a Spanish country. The women hang laundry while the boys wheelie on their bikes. It is a very homey cul-de-sac with individuals lounging on the stairs or admiring the scenery from their balconies.
The frame shifts to Iglesias performing his verse. Nicky Jam looks sideways and navigates through a crowded street in the next frame. There are separate settings where both artists lean against curbs and different streets while lip singing.
Halfway into the video, the setting shifts into nighttime as the camera focuses on one particular woman. Her crystal clear skin is tough to ignore. The pearl necklace shines on her collarbone against her silk blouse. Enrique Iglesias and Nicky Jam are now singing at a nightclub with frame transitioning city views during the dark hours. The video concludes with the artists singing and rapping in front of a smoke machine.
Never Give Up!
The song background truly showcases celebrities as average human beings who are not always successful. However, the story is truly inspiring as Nicky continues to push limits. It is a testament to not losing hope and continuing on the path you believe is your calling.
