The Song Review

Lucky You has managed to make it to the top 10 list in several countries including Australia, Canada, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The song was released on 31st August 2018 and is available to play through digital download.

Following the theme pattern of Eminem’s album, Lucky You is a partial diss track targeting particularly the artists who belong to the hip-hop and rap genre.

Eminem sings about how rappers of today have no sense of creativity and simply rhyme random completely irrelevant words to form a verse together. He further accuses them of hiring ghostwriters to write the lyrics for their songs since they themselves have zero creativity.

In a surprising twist of turn, it is also being assumed that Eminem, through this song’s lyrics, dissed the popular hip-hop artist Drake -with whom he had worked with previously. The lyrics state “I got a couple of mansions, still I don’t have any manners…. They’re askin’ me What the fuck happened to hip-hop?’ I said, I don’t have any answers.”

Despite this very strong indirect criticism pointed towards Drake, Eminem has affirmed that these particular lines were not linked to him at all.

Eminem – Lucky You ft. Joyner Lucas: the Video

Moving on to the official music video of the song, Lucky You starts off with Eminem and Lucas walking outside in what seems to be a city that has been taken over by hooded red-eyed creatures. Eminem and Lucas can be seen wearing combat vests and gear in order to tackle these creatures that have destroyed the city.

The two then move outside a building and start to sing whereas the creatures begin to approach them and join them in their act. In between the sequence, the two stop as Eminem points out how they are trying to copy everything that they do.

After a number of funny actions performed by Eminem, the music starts again as the two continue to sing. This act, in particular, is speculated to portray all the new generation rappers who are trying to copy Eminem and pretending to be like him. The moment where he points out how they cannot match up to him shows how he is purely class apart. As the sequence comes to a close, the creatures all go up in the air as the duo hit the ground after which they finally walk off.
