Shape of You – Ed Sheeran: the Song Review

Shape of You managed to take the music world by storm right after its release. It peaked number 1 in 34 country charts including the US Billboard Hot 100. It also became the most streamed song on Spotify, being streamed over 1.3 billion times.

The Lyrics

The song tells the story of a promising romance that develops between two individuals who randomly meet each other during a boxing training (according to the video) or at a bar (according to the lyrics). The song is available to play on all major musical platforms as well as through digital download.

The song, through its lyrics, follows the running story of two individuals who meet randomly and fall in love together. Initially, Sheeran sets up the tone by explaining how he meets a girl and basically just tells her to go for it and follow him into his spiraling love pattern. In the main chorus, Sheeran sings about how he is in love with the girl, both physically and mentally.

In the latter part, the lyrical story continues to the point where Sheeran explains how the couple go on dates and begin to sleep together. According to Sheeran himself, the song was initially meant to be written for Rihanna however, midway through the writing process, it was decided that the song would be sung by him.

The Video

The music video begins with Sheeran making an early appearance as he heads on to a boxing training area to work out. There, he meets a girl who is just as determined to work out and become fit as him. The sequence progresses with the two of them hanging out together and going on dates. The two also train together in different parts of town. This lasts until in the latter part, the girl suddenly takes off without notifying Sheeran who, in turn, becomes furious and goes on a training rampage.

His work out continues up to the point where he becomes actively involved in street fights, beating his opponents one by one until a sumo wrestler shows up.

Consequently, the sequence ends with Sheeran losing the fight but the girl showing up once again as she attempts to kick the face of the wrestler.

Hilariously in the pre-credits scene, Sheeran is seen struggling to get up due to his large and bulky suit. Quite similar to the song itself, the music video also became a hit on YouTube by hitting up to 3.9 billion at the time of writing and still counting. This is the second most watched video of all time behind Despacito which is number one.

The Bottom Line

Overall, Shape of You was very well received by fans all around the world. It marked the return of Ed Sheeran who had previously distanced himself from music for over a year. The song is quite different to Sheeran’s previous hits but nevertheless, it still managed to wow the fans thanks to some brilliance in composition.
