I will be honest and say that while I am aware of this franchise (it is a popular mobile game and anime) I have never really paid it much attention. Until I heard about Granblue Fantasy: Versus that is. This is a fighting game from the good folks at Arc who have made some amazing games in the past so that right there got my attention.

The Game Review
While I do not know much if anything about the lore of this world. I do know my fighting games and I can tell you right of the bat that Granblue Fantasy: Versus is a very well-made fighting game. If I had to compare it to another fighting game it would probably be Injustice as it uses a four-button system.
You have a light, medium, and strong attack as well as a character-specific attack. It is a nice amount of attacks, but the gameplay is far deeper than that. Each character as you would expect has plenty of special moves, super moves, combos and so on. However, it is the dash doges and blocks that for me really tie everything together and make this a fast, frantic and fun fighting game.
The best way I can describe this is that it is the kind of fighting game that anyone can pick up and button mash and have a great time with. The combo system, for example, is actually just you mashing one of the attack buttons. It sounds simple and compared to a game like Street Fighter V or Mortal Kombat II it is. However, it is also a lot of fun and it makes it stand out from the crowd.
One interesting thing is that there is a story mode here. It kind of plays like an RPG, but as cool as that sounds it doesn’t really work. The story is rather weak in that you just fight the other characters from the game to set them free and that is all there really is. Perhaps if I was more familiar with the franchise, I would have gotten more out of it to be fair.
Like other Arc games such as BlazBlue. Granblue Fantasy: Versus is a truly gorgeous looking game. It has an anime style and I love everything about this game from the characters to the incredibly detailed background. If you like the art style of games such as Dragon Ball FighterZ you will be blown away by this.
Not only does the game look like a million bucks. The speed at which it moves is just as impressive. Add to this a fitting and a rocking soundtrack and you have a game that is a joy to all of your senses. Arc makes amazing looking and sounding games and this one is no different.
I think that Granblue Fantasy: Versus is a great fighting game. We are early in 2020, but I have a hard time imagining a better fighting game coming out than this one. Arc once again has made a great game and while the single-player RPG mode is a bit of a letdown. The actual fighting game here is truly awesome stuff.
