The Game Review
I think that I.G.I-2 Covert Strike is far more story-driven than most other first-person shooters of this era were. You play as a badass British SAS type of guy called, David Jones. The main “villain” of the story is a Chinese general who has gone rogue called, Wu Xing. He is a fantastic villain and he reminds me of a more scaled back and realistic villain like the Far Cry series has.
The game is set all over the world. Russia, Romania, Libya, and China are some of the places that this epic tale takes place. I do think that the game shows its age a little bit, but to be fair this is a game that is not that bad on the eyes. Just know going in that this game is not going to look like Black Ops or Battlefield.
As far as the gameplay of I.G.I 2 Covert Strike goes I would say that this is more of a thinking man’s shooter and there is a great emphasis on stealth. You are kind of given the option to play a mission any way you want, but going in headfirst is not the best idea. If you do this you will end up dead super quick.
Each mission will have its own objective, sneak into here, disable that, get this intel and so on. How you go about these will differ from player to player and that is what I like about this game. I have done some missions where I have not had to really kill anyone. I used my smarts to sneak past them and I was in and out before they even knew I was there.
Part of the excitement comes from when something goes wrong. You think you have your stealth plan all worked out. Only to be caught by a guard or a CCTV camera and you end up in a firefight! While you are annoyed that your tactics did not work, you will be jacked up due to how exciting it is.
The enemy AI is a product of its time and I would say that it is very similar to how the older Metal Gear Solid games worked. A guard will have a different status when you are near. They can either be unaware of you, aware that something odd is going on and on high alert. If you get spotted by a guard or even make one aware, you can just run and hide for a few seconds and they will then go back to their designated path.
If you want an extra challenge you can play around with the settings. These are really neat and they let you decide how many hits your character can take before he dies. The difficulty of the enemies that you encounter and you can even change how many game saves you can have. On the highest difficulty, you can have it so there is no game saves! So if you die on a mission it is game over!
