The Game Review
In State of Decay 2, the player takes control of one of several survivors and is tasked with doing whatever they must to survive this zombie apocalypse. Building expansions to their base of operations, growing food, and heading out to collect resources are just some of the ways the player can keep their survivors alive. As time goes on, life gets harder in this living hell and some survivors will have their own story-related missions, each with their own focus on objectives and goals to follow along with the story. While the game does have a story, it’s used as more of a side project for the rest of the game, as State of Decay 2 expects the player to make their own apocalyptic narrative.
The game manages to play out a lot like many other third-person shooters, just with a more melee focus with regard to other games in the genre. Players can shoot, hack and slash, drive, and loot all across State of Decay 2, where the combat would easy to be considered a major part of the game. A lot of the game revolves around dealing with combat, so players can expect to bash in the heads of a lot of zombies, as the game is completely riddled with them, which is to be expected in a game about the zombie apocalypse.
Other than the combat, the game revolves around a lot of resource gathering. To keep everyone alive, happy, and healthy in the base of operations is going to need resources to keep them stocked with medicine, food, building resources, and even ammunition. With the resources, player’s can even choose to trade with other factions in the game for their items. Resource gathering requires the player to sneak inside potentially zombie-filled houses, rustle through all of the draws and storage containers in the place and make it back without losing their life.
The biggest comparison for this game would have to be the original, for obvious reasons, but the State of Decay franchise really isn’t like many other zombie survival games out there. State of Decay 2 is simply an improvement over the original, but that hasn’t stopped it from being a smash hit with fans from the original and new players alike.
While it is easy to say that the developers might have been a bit lazy with this title, as it’s pretty much just more of the same; the devs did a fine job of improving the core gameplay loop of this one. All of the addictive gameplay mechanics from the original are here, and they’re even better refined than ever.
