As someone who loves horror games, Detention has been one that has been on my radar for quite some time. The game is set in Taiwan in the 1960s during a period known as The White Terror when Taiwan was under martial law. If you like your horror more “psychological” then this is a game that you need to check out.
How to Download Detention
You can download the game for Windows, macOS, Linux, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Android, and iOS by clicking the Download button at the end of the review. Unfortunately, Detention is not available on Xbox One. If you like the game check out another fantastic horror by Red Candle Games, which is Devotion.
The Game Review
The story of the game is that you are in a school that is in a remote location in Taiwan. Wei is the name of the guy you play and he finds himself stuck at his school with just one other student, Fang who you can also play as. There is a storm warning and Wei and his lady friend decide to try and wait it out at the school.
In talking about Detention, I really do not want to spoil anything. This is a story that has creepy supernatural elements, some real drama, and fantastic character development. The less you know about the story going in the more rewarding the experience is going to be. It is the kind of horror that gets under your skin and makes you think while you are trying to sleep at night.
This is a 2D game and it looks like a million bucks. Everything is so clean, clear and well done that it really does suck you into this world. In terms of the horror, the sound design is really what is going to get under your skin. I would go as far as to say the sound design is near perfect from the footsteps to the right piece of haunting music at the right time.
As far as the gameplay of Detention goes, I would say that this is a point and click adventure game. You use the mouse to move around the screen and the left button pretty much does everything else. From moving to a location to selecting and using items to solve puzzles. The right mouse button holds your breath which you will need to do in order to avoid the evil that could be around every corner.
The enemies in the game are called The Lingered and you cannot kill them. Instead, you need to find ways to get past them and this is where most of the puzzle-solving comes in. The save points in the game are a bit spread out for my liking if I am being honest. It can be annoying having to replay a whole section just because the last save point was a bit far away.
In all, I would say that Detention is a truly fantastic game. This is the kind of game that you can really get invested in when it comes to the story. If you like horror games that are going to make you think and get really invested in what is going on you are not going to be disappointed here at all. The fact this was the first game for this small studio blows my mind!
