The Game Review

As with many mobile titles, there isn’t much to say about the story, but with Candy Crush Saga it has been somewhat developed over the years through the inclusions of new episodes and chapters, which in turn just means more levels.

Throughout these levels, you will come across different characters in this candy-filled world, and they all seem to have the same problem: some sort of candy is in the way. As the player, your job is to solve their problems by beating each level and helping them out by doing this. Once you’ve done it enough times for one character you move onto the next one and the challenges they bring.

With the overall gameplay style, Candy Crush Saga is just like many other match-three games in the genre, where the goal is to typically swipe your finger in one of four directions to match up three or more differently colored candies.

After matching those candies, they get removed from the board, and all of the rows or columns that were affected by this will have the candy that’s above them fall down into those spaces, while candy above them will be brought in from offscreen at random. By matching more than 3 you will get access to other types of candy with different types of effects, such as removing an entire column or row. With each match you’re going to gain some score and depending on how high you can get your score, you will get a rating out of 3 stars.

Each level has a different win condition. Usually, the win condition is to get enough score within the number of few turns that you have been provided. Regularly, though, to keep things challenging the levels will have the main objective that requires you to use the match-three mechanics to either crush enough of a certain candy or to get a candy to a certain area on the main board. On top of this, each level typically has a different looking board for the players to use to prevent each puzzle from getting too stale.

The biggest inspirations for Candy Crush Saga have clearly been games such as Bejeweled, where the bright colors and easy to learn mechanics of the whole game made it incredibly addicting for players to enjoy, especially for a more casual crowd.

For any fan of match-three games, Candy Crush Saga prevents things from getting too stale by giving you puzzles and challenges that aren’t all that easy to accomplish. With all of this replay value, there’s more than enough reasons to regularly jump back into the game.
