F1 2020

A little while back I wrote a review on F1 2019 and called it the best F1 game I have ever played. Well, that review is pretty much redundant now as F1 2020 is the greatest virtual take on the sport I have ever come across. It takes what was already a top-of-the-mountain kind of title and sprinkles magic all over the peak!

The Game Review

Let me start by saying that the core “mechanics” of the game are not changed much if at all. That is not a knock as by this point, Codemasters have nailed what makes a great F1 game. They have made the game more accessible or realistic with some nice touches to the difficulty and assist settings which I really do like.

Let me start by saying that you can still pick your favorite F1 driver and try and take them to the top the same way that you always did. This is always something I enjoy doing and unlike last year, you can play a full F2 season if you want before you jump into the real action. That though is not the main event of F1 2020.

What makes F1 2020 a truly spectacular game is a new mode that is called My Team. My Team allows you to create a brand new 11th F1 team and try to strive for glory. Not only are you responsible for what happens on the track, but you are also responsible for everything that happens off it!

You need to come up with a team name, colors, logo, and so on. You also need to find an engine developer, hire a second driver, develop your staff, deal with sponsors, and much more. There is so much to do in this mode and it truly feels like each step you take can make a huge difference.

I found myself completely addicted to this mode. The actual racing is fantastic, we all know that. However, it is the progression in My Team mode that is so addicting. This is one of those games where I would constantly say “just 30 more minutes” and I would still be playing an hour or two later.

This new mode is filled with so much emotion. This ranges from making a bad decision to having your second driver deciding he wants to race for someone else instead! I really cannot overstate how amazing this new mode is enough. It is by far the best thing to happen to F1 games in quite some time.

Even if you took that mode out, F1 2020 is still a tremendous game and the best the sport has ever seen. Being able to play with a buddy online or in split-screen is great. I liked how you can play as a 1 and 2 driver for the same team and try and rise to glory together. It is a nice touch and great if you have kids or younger siblings.

Sometimes people may think (and I agree) that some years they can miss out on the annual sports game. That is not the case here. No matter if you have already put hundreds of hours into F1 2019, F1 2020 is an essential purchase. Even more so actually as the My Team mode is really going to knock your socks off if you already loved what last year’s game offered.
