NGU Idle

Some games, gleefully, escape classification. Then there are games like NGU IDLE that are not hard to place in a genre but nearly impossible to describe with any degree of justice. Why? NGU IDLE is basically a game that is a fan letter to gaming in general while also being its own absurd take on the popular RPG genre. Sure, it is an idle game, but it is a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of that style of game.

The Game Review

Whether or not you’ve ever played and idle game, you might want to give this a look. Borrowing heavily from the kind of quirky humor found in the SNES RPG classic Earthbound, NGU IDLE is anything if not original.

On its face, NGU IDLE is some kind of role-playing game but, really, that designation is inaccurate at best. Sure, you play through the game tackling enemies with RPG style components but it really is at its heart a kind of passive experience that prizes clever, witty writing and atmosphere over hard RPG mechanics.

As an idle game, you will constantly accumulate stuff and do things. Here is where the game almost seems to be mocking (or at least having fun with) RPGs in some way. The number of items you collect as well as the types of enemies you encounter seems to mock the very conceits that RPGs take for granted. Among enemies you will face off against includes a couch, among others.

In terms of content, you have an almost endless amount on offer here. That’s a good thing, too, since it doesn’t require any real effort on your part to participate. With 300 bosses to face down (and counting) you’re not going to hit up the game’s Discord complaining about a lack of content. A cult hit that is quickly climbing into the broader gaming landscape, NGU IDLE is first and foremost a game for the fans and anyone who decides to tag along after that better be prepared for the ride ahead.

To break things up, there are some moments of active play though these aren’t terribly in-depth or that exacting when it comes to mental capacity. You will be forced to face off against enemies and make certain decisions but, for the most part, the game takes care of itself. Is it for everyone? No, probably, but it isn’t trying to be at the same time. This game caters to its niche and it does so extremely well.

The attraction of this game is that it is well written, different, quirky, and somewhat compelling because of all of this. It has a dedicated base of fans as well as a constant stream of content. Picking it up isn’t hard and keeping it going is even less painful. For players that find themselves stretched for time but who want to experience something new and experimental, then look no further than NGU IDLE. It will deliver hours of fun, interesting gameplay experiences, and more than enough content to choke a horse.
