The Game Review
The start of the game requires the player to create their own character. There are many different hairstyles, skin tones, and face types to choose from. Once the character is ready, we cut to a scene in a helicopter where we are briefed by Faye Lau, a strategic homeland division agent. We are told about the scenario and brought up to speed and told to help other members of The Division who were deep inside the dark zone. The two major locations we are introduced to early on in the game are the base of operations and the dark zone. The base of operations is from where The Division operates primarily. The dark zone is located in the deeper parts of Manhattan and we find out that there is some equipment there that is important to all the factions.
We also learn about the different factions that have emerged in the city that include our faction, Strategic Homeland Division, and others including, Joint Task Force, Rioters, Rikers, Cleaners, and Last Man Batallion. Each faction has its own agenda and for our faction, it was to regain control of the city after an infectious contagion takes over.
Once we gain control of our character, we can roam about the universe of the game. The scene is a deserted and snowy New York City, which we learn has been affected by a pandemic called Black Friday. It is the cause of all of New York’s service failing and people resorting to fighting for their own agendas.
The game is an RPG, however, it is also a looter game which means that it allows you to collect items from other people. Early on, we come across a man who is injured and is in need of a medkit (a healing item) to recover. If we give one to him we get a beanie from the old man. We can use our earnings or skill points to purchase upgrades, weaponry, armor or clothing from vendors scattered around the city. Apart from the free world experience where you team up with other agents or fight against them, there are missions and side missions that advance the plot as you play along.
There are four kinds of missions we can play. There are medical, tech, security, and other story missions. The first medical mission we can play is at Madison Field Hospital. We are required to rescue Dr. Jessica Kandel from the Rioters (another faction).
There is a multiplayer feature of the game that allows us to build up forces and fight alongside or against other players.
