The Game Review
The story of this MMORPG is a fascinating one; providing the player allows themselves to become engaged in the world. With World of Warcraft, almost all of the lore and story is told through different engaging quests and storylines that reveal to the player different character arcs and how the world of Azeroth has been shaped around them. Even with each new expansion, they bring a new set of lore and story to the game that a player wouldn’t quite get to see unless they go out and look for it.
We are dealing here with a traditional hot-bar MMORPG, where the player is expected to find an NPC of some kind, right-click them and then hit buttons on their keyboard to activate a certain skill or ability. This MMO has always been known for originating the idea of the hot-bar MMORPG in some ways and has refined this gameplay over the years. For players looking for something a little more action-packed then there are other MMO’s on offer, but through years of refinement, Blizzard has created a system that’s hard not to enjoy for both casual and hardcore fans.
Just like in many other MMORPG’s, the core gameplay loop has the player roam around the enormous realm of Azeroth, picking up quests, talking to NPC’s, and killing a great number of evil creatures that want them dead for one reason or another. The further the player gets into the game, they’ll start to level up, improve the overall strength of their character, and even acquire some awesome loot while at it if they’re lucky enough.
In terms of visuals, World of Warcraft is starting to reach its 14th birthday and while the developers have done their best to update the visuals as much as they can, the game can’t help but look outdated in some areas. What keeps the game standing, however, is the somewhat cartoonish graphics that make the game look relevant in today’s climate; something not many MMO’s manage to get right.
Easily the biggest comparison would have to be other MMO’s, such as Lineage 2 or Guild Wars, both of which have a heavy focus on the story and the lore in their games, all the while having a unique and engaging visual style – at least at the time. As far as success goes, though, World of Warcraft has the two of them beat without a second thought.
World of Warcraft may be a very old game in today’s standards, but the overall experience it gives for the player is one that isn’t easy to find in MMORPG’s anymore and that’s why this fantasy RPG remains the world’s most popular MMORPG for quite some time now.
