Laser League is a top-down downloadable action sports multiplayer title, developed by Roll7, the same team behind the entertaining and addictive Olli Olli franchise. Originally released on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One, the game got its official release on the 10th May 2018. The Game Review
Gameplay in Laser League is very simple, as it has the player take control of a character, each of which will have different visuals and abilities depending on the character class chosen. As a part of a team – either 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3 – players must reach different nodes on a stage to activate their own lasers for their team. By activating those lasers, the opposing team is now at risk to them. By any chance an opposing team member touches a laser that isn’t their own, they will be eliminated from the match until a teammate revives them, or their team wins or loses the match. Coming back to the Dodgeball comparison, the game is all about reflexes and having the player dodge the enemy’s lasers as best as possible until one team wins. Whenever one team wins they will gain a point and the first team to acquire three points will take the round. The first team to take two out of the three rounds will win the overall match.
Before every match or round, each player can pick and choose from a variety of different characters, each with their own unique ability. The characters play completely differently from one another and it makes for unique teams and matches. Alongside these character abilities, there are also power-ups to be found throughout every single fight, all of which have different uses on the field. Some are offensive, and some are defensive, just like how the character abilities are.
Looking at the game from a visual standpoint, it has a very distinct neon-type aesthetic to it. Every interactable object in the game is very distinguishable through the bright and vibrant colors. The backgrounds, on the other hand, are designed to be minimalistic and less interesting, as Laser League is the type of game that requires some proper focus if the player wishes to succeed.
One of the easiest comparisons that can be made for this game is its similarity in regard to Rocket League; not in gameplay, but in the idea-sense. Rocket League took the idea of a sport and made it much easier and more arcade-like to make it approachable for thousands upon thousands of players. Laser League manages to pull off the same idea by taking a sport like Dodgeball and making it play almost nothing like it, making it that much more enjoyable for the average player.
While Rocket League did manage to pull off its own idea, Laser League has managed to do the exact same thing all over again. By creating an easy to pick up multiplayer sports game, the developers have ensured that hours of fun are to be had consistently in this interesting title.
