A more light-hearted take on the NBA 2K19 formula, the downloadable title NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 is a game that suspends physics and simulation in favor of an arcade-style basketball game. What you get is at times reminiscent of NBA Jam and at others its own thing entirely. Saber Interactive’s off-the-wall series of games that spins the NBA 2K formula into something whacky, this title is the second installment and does not shy away from its classic arcade inspirations.

Bringing some big names to the court, NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 also doesn’t make the mistake of packaging an awesome concept in an otherwise lackluster wrapping and everything you’d expect from a game with the NBA license on it is present and accounted for in this title.
Players are rendered in a bobble-head style and their movements are anything but realistic.
Huge leaps and bounds are par for the course in this game and it is rare that there is a dull moment. Preferencing action over running out the clock, NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 will keep players on their toes until the end. Leaping over tall buildings and otherwise exhibiting super-hero characteristics is one thing, but the solid core gameplay is another and this basketball simulator does not disappoint in this area.
Players looking for a competitive basketball game will be hard pressed to find something more fun than this but also might find its loose interpretation of the mechanics of the game somewhat jarring to experience.
There are a ton of modes on offer outside of the traditional basketball matchup including three-point shootout contests and the like. Gamers expecting some kind of realistic depiction of players in terms of graphics should probably stick with the mainline NBA 2K series as the depictions in here are very cartoony and exaggerated. There’s nothing wrong with this but there are moments when the action becomes absolutely ridiculous as a result.
Competitive basketball matches aside, there are tons of other options for players to choose from and there is also a lot of variety in the online matching for the game as well.
Available for nearly every major format, the game boasts as healthy and robust an online community as any game. Part of the reason the title is so fun is because of the online competition and players should expect a challenge when they log on to the matchmaking service.
It all comes down to what type of gamer is NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 for exactly? The title probably will appeal most to people who don’t regularly play sports games but are NBA fans nonetheless.
It has a disarming, arcade-like approach that makes the game accessible and fun to play for people who “don’t know what they’re doing.” NBA 2K19 can be a bit intense and its simulation elements can be isolation for people who haven’t played a serious NBA title before.
The opposite is true with NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 and that makes it a great first choice for people who don’t often play NBA 2K games.
