Dota Auto Chess

Since the beginning of 2019, Dota Auto Chess has gotten its hooks into a ton of people. As I write this the player base is at something like 6 million people! That is pretty insane for a game that is really just a side game and something to mess around with inside the Dota 2 client.

The Game Review

So, what is Dota Auto Chess? Well, the name makes you think that this is a combination of Dota 2 and chess. However, I would have to say that this is certainly not Dota and it is also not really what you would expect from a game called chess either. I am frankly quite glad about this as I am probably the worst chess player in existence.

What Dota Auto Chess is, is very, very addictive! I would best describe this as a kind of turn-based strategy game. The idea of the game is that you will be going up against other players until there is a clear-cut winner. You will need to pick your unit, manage your resources and if playing with others, try to work out a good strategy.

At the start of the game, you will get to pick from a reasonable number of units. As the game progresses the choices get larger and if you have the gold and also the space you are free to build however you want. There is though some strategy in play here in terms of what units you go for. Using units of the same race can give you pretty awesome bonuses that can swing the battle in your favor.

For example, if you have a squad filled with Mage’s then the other team will have a hard time fending off magic. Assassins, Mechs, Hunters, Knights and so on all have their own “buffs” when they are stacked together on a team. Figuring out which is best can be the key to becoming unstoppable.

Another part of the “strategy” of Dota Auto Chess is that you need to rank up your units. In order to rank up, you need to have three of the same unit. You also need to watch your funds, even though you do get more each time you play and win. I found that a couple of wrong decisions at the start of the game can result in you being out on your butt before you even have the chance to make some real money.

The reason that there is “Auto” in the title is that once you pick your units, the game does pretty much everything else for you. While there is a lot of strategy in play in Dota Auto Chess, I felt it was a rather relaxing game… to a point and then it becomes pretty stressful and intense!

You can play Dota Auto Chess all by yourself if you want and have an awesome time in the process. Also, you can play with buddies if you want to try and show them you are the boss, or if you want to team up to have some fun that way. It does take a little while to get used to exactly what is going on, but I do think it is simple enough to get into.

I was actually pretty surprised by how much fun Dota Auto Chess is. I found it way more addictive than I thought I would and if you are not into chess, do not be put off. It is a fun distraction and one that is getting really, really popular. I am very interested to see what is added to this now that the game has really blown up.
