Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians

One of the most popular long-running role-playing game series out there, Might & Magic from New World Computing (now Ubisoft), began life as one of the PC’s foundational RPG experiences and is now under a completely new, revamped continuity since its purchase by Ubisoft. Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians is a downloadable app for Android and iOS phones that replicates the classic Might & Magic from the early PC days on mobile formats.

The Game Review

The game involves exploration, collecting creatures Pokemon style, and leveling up your character to make them more powerful. Basically, your standard action RPG fare. It not only features extensive character customization elements but also a fully fleshed out story in single-player and a challenging but addictive PVP experience in multiplayer.

As the title implies, combat is based upon melee or spellcasting abilities. Divided into Fire, Water, Air, and Earth, Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians has an easy to understand magic system similar to that found in Magic the Gathering. As expected, certain elements are more effective in certain situations than in others which adds a strategic element to combat.

When you begin the game you will be asked to select a House of Magic: Materia, Chimera, or Anima. Each choice offers different benefits and disadvantages. Players should research what is what before deciding on a school. After that, customization and leveling are pretty straightforward but deep and rewarding nonetheless.

One thing that has a lot of Might & Magic fans talking is the Pokemon-like collection element found in the game. You can not only capture them and train them but also evolve them in a sense.

This not only adds a hugely compelling collectible element to the game but also a new gameplay mechanic entirely. Speaking of enhancements, characters can also find and collect glyphs to improve their abilities.

Taking a page from some of the most popular MMORPGs out there, the PVP arena offers players weekly events and unique rewards for participating. There are also league leaderboards and competitions to challenge players.

Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians is a blend of high-fantasy graphics and bright, colorful vistas that you would find in a Diablo game. The blend of grit and the surreal is appropriate given the series’ history as an action-heavy adventure title in the vein of a Conan film from the 1980s.
