For you to understand what this game is all about you have to be at least vaguely familiar with the Stargate franchise.
Stargate refers to a science fiction franchise that originated with the film Stargate released in 1994, directed by Roland Emmerich. The franchise expanded to include several television series, films, books, comics, and video games. The Game Review
And when you hear in the intro that our story begins in Antarctica and SG-1 is looking for some ancient technology, you have to know that SG-1 is a military team, part of a secret operation known as the Stargate Command (SGC).
SG-1 uses the Stargate to explore new worlds, forge alliances with friendly aliens, and protect Earth from hostile forces, including the Goa’uld, the Ori, and the Replicators.
And then it’s also good to know that Stargate Command (often abbreviated as SGC) is a fictional military base located inside Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, near Colorado Springs, Colorado. This base serves as the primary setting for the Stargate SG-1 TV series and plays a significant role in the other series and movies.
Armed with this knowledge you are ready to play Stargate: Timekeepers, which is a science fiction stealth tactics game.
Your initial protagonists are Col. Eva McCain and Maj. Max Bolton and it’s good to know that Earth is at war with certain Anubus, who is “the dominant System Lord ot the Goa’uld Empire”
You see this is the problem. The game takes for granted that you know and understand all of this as if you were straight after finishing watching the 7 seasons of the television series Stargate SG-1. And that’s a shame.
Different playstyles are allowed and different skills of your teammates can be used to achieve your goals. You can move fast and shoot and then grenades and guns are your friends when you’re set on disposing groups of enemies.
You have to be cautious though because ammo is limited.
Another approach is to pretend to be one of the alien soldiers, which can let the rest of the team complete your mission.
Timekeepers has pretty decent graphics for what it is. The pictures of the characters, the way the characters look, and the special effects might not be the newest or most detailed out there. However, every level is set in a cool and different alien place.
These places have lots of unique details, so playing doesn’t get boring. The way the levels are made is also really good. They get harder in a way that feels just right, introducing new challenges like drones that move around, which makes you have to think quickly and change your plan to fit the new situations.
If you like science fiction and stealth tactical games this will be a game for you, and if you’re a fan of Stargate and are proficient with its lore, this will surely be something you’ll find great value in.
