The Film Review
The story is set in the year 2020 where most of the human population has been wiped out by blind creatures who attack anything that emits noise. Amongst the human population that remains, the Abbot family consisting of husband Lee, wife Evelyn, daughter Regan, and sons Marcus and Beau, attempt to carry on with their routine lives while also trying to find a way to kill these monsters. The family uses American sign language to communicate with each other.
One day, while out on their usual business, Beau activates a toy shuttle that starts making a sound which in turn attracts a nearby creature’s attention. Despite Lee’s attempts to protect Beau, the creature attacks rapidly and manages to kill Beau. Soon, Evelyn becomes pregnant once again and a year later, as she is about to give birth, she accidentally steps on a large nail and drops a glass picture frame which creates a noise thereby, alerting another nearby creature. Evelyn quickly flips a switch which alerts Lee and the rest.
In the midst of everything, Lee becomes separated from his kids but manages to reach Evelyn just in time to see their newborn child. Lee then goes back out to look for the kids and finds out that they are hiding from a creature in a nearby truck. Lee goes in front and yells out loud which leads the creature to attack him, resulting in his death.
Evelyn and the kids figure out the creature’s weakness in one of Lee’s experimentation notes thereby preparing them to fight back against these monsters and get rid of them once and for all.
A Quiet Place is a movie which is specifically produced to make the audience experience tension in complete silence. The whole theme of the film revolves around being quiet as uttering even a single word or sentence could get you killed by creatures who are apparently blind.
Director John Krasinski wastes very little time in making the audience familiar with the overall setting of the movie. The remarkable cast makes sure that the audience becomes completely absorbed in the film and plays along with the story by keeping completely quiet and at the edge of their seats throughout.
The creatures portrayed in the film played a major role in making the movie as terrifying as it is. The credit for that goes to production designer Jeffrey Beecroft along with the special effects supervisor Scott Farrar who worked together in designing those creatures. Due to budgetary reasons, Krasinski insisted that he wanted to do as much as possible in-camera.
A Quiet Place is one of those rare horror films that prey on the nerves of the audience without the use of mainstream jump scares. The film has become viral over the past couple of months and has managed to cross over $330 million so far. The movie has also been rated 95% by Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the top horror movies of all time to watch.
