Brick is a German made Netflix original movie and one of the more surprising ones of the year for me. This is getting pretty mid reviews, but I found it to be a pretty fun thriller with a little bit of a sci-fi twist. I am not saying that this is amazing or anything like that, but I had fun with it, and you can certainly do a heck of a lot worse if you are looking for something new to watch on Netflix.
Where to Watch Brick
Brick was released on July 10, 2025 on Netflix. You can stream the film from this digital platform. If German mystery cinema is your things, check out also Dark and 1899.
The Movie Review
Netflix’s New UI and Lack of Originals
That brings me to something I want to talk about before we get to the actual movie. I feel that Netflix has had a real lack of new original content lately, and their horrible new UI has legit made me question if this streaming service is still for me! I honestly have no idea how anyone at Netflix thought that this new UI was an upgrade on what they had before!
First Impressions of Brick
Anyway, that is perhaps why I found Brick to be as entertaining as I did. It was something new on Netflix, and it was actually right at the top, and I did not have to scroll through their giant ass pictures of each show and movie to find it! While this is a German movie, you can watch it with subtitles or dubbed. I watched it dubbed in English and had no complaints over the dubbing. However, I have read other reviews where people complain about the acting and the dubbing, but it was honestly not an issue for me.
Brick Plot Summary: Trapped and Terrified
I saw the trailer for Brick a few weeks before the movie, and I was very intrigued. Our two main characters are a couple called Tim (Matthias Schweighöfer) and Olivia (the beautiful Ruby O. Fee). Tim and Olivia are on the rocks as they are having a hard time dealing with a tragedy, and there is a breaking point; and Olivia wants to call it a day and leave.
Well, turns out that this is easier said than done, not for emotional or even financial needs! Olivia cannot leave as the doorway and the windows are sealed with a strange door full of these black bricks. People have complained about the acting, but I thought the sense of confusion and the hints of fear as they tried to figure out what the heck was going on were well done.
Brick’s Sci-Fi Mystery: What’s With the Wall?
It is soon realized that the door is made from some kind of metal, and it has a magnetic field/quality about it. They decide to knock through to the next apartment and meet another two characters, Marvin and Ana. To say that Marvin is a screw up is an understatement; he is a character who is high on drugs when we first meet him, and he makes poor decisions after poor decisions for most of the movie!
Descent Into Madness: Exploring the Building in Brick
Remembering that there is some kind of shelter that leads to the outside in the basement. They start digging through the floor to make their way down to the next apartment, where they meet an elderly man and his granddaughter. It is once they dig to the next level after that things get insane as they meet another guy who seems to have a bit of an understanding of what this wall is and why it is here.
Brick Ending Explained (Without Spoilers)
No spoilers here, but we eventually have a scenario where you are unsure of why this wall is actually here. Granted, there are a lot of things that just “happen” in the movie in regards to characters figuring things out and getting out of certain situations. However, if you can turn your brain off and just enjoy the mystery of these people being stuck in their apartment building, you may find this to be a pretty fun time. Oh, I also thought for sure this would have some kind of BS, not explaining anything ending, but it actually did explain exactly what the deal was at the end, so I appreciated that!
