I recently watched Cocoon for the first time in what has to be about 20 years and I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it. I remembered liking this movie when I first saw it, but it was so much better than I remembered it being! For whatever reason, I also forgot that this was one of Ron Howard’s earlier movies that he directed too. I only ended up watching it as I found the Cocoon and the Cocoon 2 double-pack DVD for £1!

The Movie Review
The Epic Sci-Fi Story of Cocoon
The opening of Cocoon is awesome where we find out about this race of aliens called the Antareans who thousands of years ago set up a base here on Earth in the city we know as Atlantis! Atlantis eventually sank and a handful of aliens were preserved in cocoons and in the modern day, a rescue team has come to Earth to take these long marooned Antareans back to their home planet.
They hire a guy called Jack to take them out on his boat and Jack by being a peeping tom, discovers that these “people” are aliens. Jack befriends one of the Antareans called Kitty and they become pretty close. The Antareans rent a place near a retirement home to store the cocoons in a pool while they wait to be transported off Earth.
The Magical Pool and the Old Folks
However, a group of retirees with various health problems sneak into the pool and discover that it has healing properties. These old folk now are super fit and healthy and they too find out about the Antareans. It is great seeing these old people get a new lease on life thanks to the healing powers of this pool. The movie is most certainly a sci-fi movie, but it is also a bit of a slice-of-life movie too.
A Moving Conclusion
Of course, the good times cannot last and the Antareans end up having to leave the cocoons behind, but they do offer these old-timers a chance to come to their home planet where they will never age, never get sick, and never die. This is just fantastic stuff, it is the kind of movie that just sucks you in right from the start and you are invested and interested in these characters all the way until the end. My only criticism is that I kind of wish that Jack went with them.
Why Cocoon Is Worth a Rewatch
Cocoon is just a fun time pure and simple, I had a blast watching this and my wife who usually will not watch anything if she finds out it has aliens in it, really enjoyed it too. I will say that the DVD pack I got was not the best way to see these movies as it seems like they just took the VHS and put it onto a disc, however, I paid £1 for it so why am I complaining? I enjoyed this so much that I think I may pick this up on Blu-Ray at some point, I checked and as of writing, there is no 4K release of the movie yet. If you have never seen this before, give it a watch and if you have, but it has been a while, give it another chance and see if it is better than you remember too.
