Coraline

Coraline truly is a fantastic movie and a movie! I love this movie so much that I would put it just behind The Nightmare Before Christmas as my favorite stop motion style movie. I love the horror story that it tells and even though this is a “family” movie, it has a real creepiness about it. I would say that it would be a perfect introduction for a kid to the world of horror, but it may be a tad scary for really young children.

The Movie Review

The movie is brought to us by Henry Selick who certainly knows what he is doing. Having worked on The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, Henry Selick is certainly no stranger to the world of stop motion. While having him in charge is great, they managed to get a fantastic voice cast for this movie.

In the titular role of Coraline we have Dakota Fanning, remember in the 2000s when for a while it was like she was in every other movie? Dakota Fanning is joined by the likes of Teri Hatcher, UK comedy duo French & Saunders, Keith David, and Ian McShane. I have to give major credit to Teri Hatcher who plays the villain of the movie, she manages to be caring and creepy and I have never felt that she got the credit she deserved for this role.

The movie is about a young girl called Coraline who with her mother and father has moved to a new apartment. Coraline’s mom and dad work really hard so they do not exactly have a ton of time for her. One night, a strange doll that looks like Coraline shows her the way to a secret portal that will take her to another world.

This other world is a strange alternate version of her world and here she meets two beings that look like her parents. The difference here is that they have buttons on their eyes, but despite their creepy appearance they are more loving and interested in her than her own parents

Coraline heads back to the real world and she and her friend Wybie discuss what is going on and find out that people in the apartment have been going missing. Coraline has a feeling something is not right, but she heads back to the other world a few more times, but this other world and its “ruler” show their true colors.

It is here where her doppelganger mother lets her know that she can stay there with her forever, but she needs to replace her eyes with buttons! As you would expect, this freaks out Coraline and she runs away, but this evil creature is one step ahead and has kidnaped her parents, leading Coraline on a quest to not just save them, but the other souls that this thing has taken!

I have probably seen this movie around five times and it never fails to impress me. Coraline is one of the best kids’ horror movies, if not THE best I have ever seen. The stop motion animation looks fantastic and I just love how creepy and sinister the whole thing is! Without a doubt, this is a movie that is worth watching.
