2025 has been pretty good for Blumhouse so far. While I did not love The Woman in the Yard, I still thought it was a decent movie, and earlier in the year, Wolf Man was a lot of fun. Blumhouse is easily one of my favorite studios of the last decade or so, even the “worst” Blumhouse movie is never terrible, so I am always excited when a movie has that Blumhouse tag attached to it.

The Movie Review
A Suspenseful New Thriller from Blumhouse
When I think of Blumhouse, I do think of horror, but Blumhouse does make some solid thrillers as well, and Drop is a prime example of that. To be honest, the trailer for Drop pretty much tells you all that you need to know about the movie. While I do think that modern trailers spoil movies way too much, I do not think that the trailer giving away the premise of Drop is bad at all.
Setting the Stage: Meet Violet
Violett is a single mother who works as a therapist. Violet has spent the last few years dedicated to raising her son and also working as a therapist, but she is going out on her first date in years. The movie does a wonderful job right from the start, making you care about Violet. Violet’s sister is going to look after her kid while she is babysitting, but as she has security cameras in the house, she can keep an eye on them, which makes her feel a little better about going out on this date.
An Ordinary Night Turns Sinister
Violette heads to a pretty nice restaurant, but gets a text that her date, Henry, is running late. While waiting for him, Violete chats it up with the waitress and a few bar patrons, too. Eventually, Henry shows up, and she and Violet head to their table, and they start to get to know each other. You can tell that Henry is a good dude, and Henry does his best to try and put Violette at ease as she is clearly nervous about this date.
The Drop Begins
Pretty much right away, Violet starts getting strange drops with memes and messages, but they soon turn sinister as it is revealed an intruder is in her house, and she needs to do what the texts/drops say or her sister and son will be killed! Granted, all of this is shown in the trailer, and I did wonder if that would hurt the tension of the movie, but it does not.
Tension That Keeps You Guessing
Drop is a very tense movie, as you know that the person behind this is somewhere in the restaurant with Violet and Henry. You can tell that Violet is smart, and she has some good ideas, but the person behind this always appears to be one step ahead. Granted, I do think that the trailer showed a few things that would have been better left as a surprise, most notably the scene where the window gets blown out. However, I was frantically trying to figure out who this person was the whole time until the reveal happened.
Final Thoughts on Drop
I will be honest, if Drop did not have that Blumhouse logo on it, I probably would have waited a while to watch this one. I am glad I watched it as it was a fun and tense thriller. Even though I did enjoy it, for me, this is a one-and-done kind of movie, as I do not think it would have the same amount of tension or even excitement on a repeat viewing once you know the twists and turns of the situation Violet is in.
