Escape Room is a movie that is getting a lot of attention lately. Just to be clear this is a review of the 2019 Escape Room movie. I say this because there is another movie called Escape Room that was released in 2017, which has recently come to Netflix and that is causing a little confusion with this new title.

The Film Review
I was into this movie from the first trailer. The director of the movie, Will Wernick has been behind movies such as Insidious: The Last Key as well as one of the Paranormal Activity movies so that right there got me interested. Also, escape rooms are all the rage right now and it is like every city has at least one.
Let me say right off the bat that I got a very “Saw” like feeling from the movie and I mean that in a good way. A group of strangers is given the chance to win ten grand if they can escape the most high-tech and immersive escape room ever created. The six characters who enter this place could have very easily been just throwaway characters.
That is not the case though and the movie does a far better job of showcasing the characters as individuals than I thought it would. Of course, this escape room is not like any other and the characters soon realize that they are not just playing to win ten grand they are playing for their lives.
The high tech escape rooms that they go to are really very well designed. You can tell that the creators of this movie were very heavily influenced by SAW as some of the room designs are truly fantastic and have you on the edge of your seat as the characters try to figure them out.
Which brings me to what I loved most about this movie, its sense of urgency. The whole time you are watching you are on the edge of your seat. You are trying to figure out how they escape, you are praying that they figure it out, but at the same time, you kind of want them to fail as you want to see what horrible way they meet there end. You also want to know who is behind this place and who is watching them.
Escape Room is a really fun movie and it moves along at a very brisk pace. Without giving any spoilers away, if I do have a criticism it is that rather than wrapping things up and letting us know what is happening. The Film is clearly setting things up for not just a sequel, but a potential franchise!
This is not necessarily a bad thing as the movie is a blast to watch and if you loved the SAW movies and movies like Cabin in the Woods, I feel that you are going to have a lot of fun with the film. I am actually very interested to see what happens with this movie and how any potential sequels could play out.
