Today we are checking out the Netflix TV series, Free Rein. Actually, this is more of a franchise than a TV series as Netflix also made two specials/movies for the show as well. This is a teenager/coming of age type show that I ended up watching because my wife loved the Canadian TV series Heartland which is about horses like this show is.

The Movie Review
The premise of Free Rein is that Zoe, a 15-year-old girl from LA is spending the summer in England. Zoe is going to be staying in a little countryside place where her mother is originally from. The “quaint” English country town setting has a lot of charm to it and seeing Zoe have to try and get to grips with how different things are here from her life in LA is part of the fun.
Zoe ends up coming across a horse which is basically the catalyst for everything that happens in the show over the next three seasons! Zoe will learn about friendship, betrayal, love and start to come into her own as a person. It is your typical coming-of-age story in many ways and it is a very easy and relaxing watch. It has a pretty diverse and large cast of characters over its three-season run too.
The whole horse aspect of the show is something that people who like Free Rein really get into. There is a bit of drama here and the third season has a cool story arc that features a bit of danger going on that I really enjoyed. Actually, I will say that the first season is pretty slow if I am being honest with you guys.
Things ramp up and get more entertaining as the series goes on. I have to be real and say that if it was not for my wife, I might have checked out before season 1 ended. However, I am glad I stuck with it as it was a fun, but cheesy kind of show that is ideal if you want something that does not require a lot of “dedication” to enjoy. Sometimes you want a show that is not too tasking on the brain and that is exactly what this is.
As well as the three seasons, Free Rein does also have two what they call specials for you to watch as well. The two specials they made, The Twelve Neighs Of Christmas and Valentines Day take place between seasons 2 and 3. I found the Twelve Neighs Of Christmas one to be a lot of fun and it may make our regular Christmas season viewing list!
Free Rein is one of those shows that gets better and better as it goes on. While the first season is not great, I do think that season 2 and especially season 3 are fun. if you have an interest in horses and like coming of age dramas that have a lot of heart. You can certainly do a lot worse than this show so give it a try, plus the Christmas special really is quite good.
