Let me start by saying that Godzilla King of the Monsters is the movie I really wanted with the 2014 reboot. That Godzilla movie was decent enough, but it was a bit “artsy” and tried to be more than just fighting monsters. For the sequel and latest installment in this MonsterVerse cinematic universe, they give us fans pretty much what we wanted.

The Movie Review
Let’s start with the human cast. It is a solid cast with Millie Bobbie Brown, Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga leading the charge. They do a good enough job and I think that Kyle Chandler’s role as an ex Monarch employee is kind of cool. Vera Farmiga though is a very confusing character whose goals are kind of all over the place and it is impossible not to love Mille Bobbie Brown.
Monarch is once again tracking these monsters that are appearing all over the globe. I really liked how they fleshed out this organization from the first movie. Godzilla is not alone and classic monsters, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah are here to fight. That right there is enough to get me excited and flashback to watching the classics in the early hours of Saturday morning as a kid.
I think that with Godzilla King of the Monsters they got the tone of the movie right. There is no “hiding” the monsters here like in the first movie and you get an epic scene right at the start of the movie. I am surprised that this is not getting more praise for its set pieces and special effects as it is some of the best from the whole of 2019!
Seeing Godzilla battle with his most famous foes is really cool. One thing I want to mention about the monsters is how much personality each one has. This is really well done and it makes them even cooler than I thought they would be. The monsters also look awesome which I was happy to see.
As far as Godzilla goes, I like what they did with him here. Is he here to protect the Earth and mankind? It is something that I always wondered, but he does have a rather touching moment that does kind of humanize him which I liked. Speaking of “humans” Monarch is kind of cool in this movie.
One of my favorite parts of the movie was not even a full monster vs monster battle. There is an amazing set piece where Monarch is taking on Rodan in a battle in the sky and it is truly incredible stuff. The movie moves from one set piece to another at a good pace and it does try to “ground” it in places, but it is nowhere near as slow-paced as the first movie.
I had a lot of fun with Godzilla King of the Monsters and think it is easily the kind of movie I could watch time and time again. I liked the first one, but it was a tad pretentious, King of the Monsters is just a ton of fun. Plus, it builds on this MonsterVerse that they are creating really well too. I am legit excited to see where this series goes.
