Halloween: Resurrection

Recently I talked about Halloween H20 and how it is one of, if not my favorite movies in the Halloween franchise! Well, now it is time to talk about the sequel, 2002’s Halloween: Resurrection. Not only is this a direct sequel to Halloween H20, but this is the last in this saga of Halloween as rock legend Rob Zombie would be tasked with rebooting the series in a few years.

The Movie Review

Look, Halloween: Resurrection is not one of the better movies in the series; that is for sure, but I do think this is better than Halloween 5 and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers! You know, in watching this again recently, I feel like this is one of those, so bad it is good kind of movies. It is cheesy as hell and an absolute product of the time that it was made. In the late 90s and early 00s, reality TV shows were a big deal. I am not sure why that was picked as the setting for a Halloween movie, but what do I know?

The Shocking Opening: Laurie’s Final Stand

Let us start with something positive, and that is the opening scene. Laurie Strode is in a mental hospital after the events of Halloween H2O. Turns out that the “Michael” Laurie thought she decapitated was actually a paramedic that Michael had put the mask on before he escaped! This whole scene is done very, very well, and it sets the movie up for great things. However, Michael finally completes his goal and kills his sister, Laurie in the opening act! I remember seeing this for the first time and being shocked that Laurie had been killed.

Unfortunately, after this, the movie goes downhill. We have two TV producers in Freddie and Nora who have made a reality show where college kids need to stay in Michael’s childhood home and find out what drove him to be a killer. As I said, reality shows like this were very popular back then. Freddie is played by rap legend Busta Rhymes, and Nora is played by the supermodel Tyra Banks, who would actually go on to star in a reality show!

Forgettable Cast and Michael’s Return

I am writing this just a couple of days after watching Halloween: Resurrection for the first time in many years and off the top of my head I could not tell you the name of one of those college kids! That is how forgettable our cast of characters are, actually before watching this, Busta Rhymes’ character was the only one I remembered.

Our group of college kids go to Michael’s old house to be part of the show. Each one has their own reasons for doing so, and none of these reasons are interesting in the slightest. As you would expect, Michael returns to Haddonfield and his childhood home after killing Laurie and is not picking off the people who have moved into his house. Those who do not die think this is all part of the show and just go along with it. These are seriously some of the dumbest kids to ever be in a slasher movie.

It takes people way to long to realize that people are actually dying and Michael is here and the one behind it all. There are some creative kills in the movie, but the highlight is 100 percent Busta Rhymes going toe to toe with Michael Myers and using some kind of kung-fu as he does. This is a hilarious scene, but the way the movie plays it all so straight and serious it what makes it even funnier.

Visual Style and Final Thoughts

The movie does have some fun kills and it is cool the way that they have tried to make Michael’s childhood home even creepier. More than a few parts of this movie are hard to watch due to the way it is filmed. You have some scenes that are way too dark and others that are done via the cameras the college kids are wearing. It is a real shame too because the house does look fantastic.

While this is not a great movie, it is not absolute trash either. The whole movie just feels like an excuse to get a bunch of people into Michael’s house so that he can kill them in gruesome and fun ways. Hey, in that regard, the movie succeeds! A lot of people hate this movie and I would never try to convince them it is a good movie and that they are wrong. However, I do have a bit of a soft spot for this, and as I said, it is so bad it is kind of good. If you want some laughs, you will certainly find them here. Although, it is not surprising this killed the franchise and caused the Rob Zombie reboot a few years later.
