The Game Review
Chamber of Secrets continues from where the first movie, Harry Potter, and the Sorcerer’s Stone, left off as we get to see Harry miserably spending the summer with the Dursleys. One day, a house-elf named Dobby appears and warns Harry of the consequences of his going back to Hogwarts. Regardless, Harry travels to Hogwarts with Ron Weasley and his twin brothers in their magical flying car.
It is revealed that the famous celebrity wizard Gilderoy Lockhart is confirmed as their new Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher. Due to the car crash caused by Ron in his father’s car, Harry is forced to serve detention under Lockhart where he hears strange voices that no one else can hear and later discovers a message written in blood stating that the chamber of secrets has been opened.
The chamber apparently contains a monster that only Salazar Slytherin’s heir can control. Harry and Ron suspect Malfoy to be the heir but a former student named Tom Marvolo Riddle’s diary shows that Hagrid was previously responsible for opening the chamber which results in Hagrid’s arrest. Meanwhile, Harry, Ron, and Hermione investigate only to find that Lockhart is a fraud and that Tom Riddle framed Hagrid only to reopen the chamber. Riddle summons Basilisk, a large snake that Harry battles, killing it at the end. Harry defeats Riddle and goes back to Hogwarts where he reunites with Ron, Hermione, and Hagrid who is released from Azkaban.
Similar to its prequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets played a major part in revolutionizing the use of CGI. According to the CG supervisor Chris Jarret, the team took around 251 shots out of which, 244 made it all the way to the film.
The animation crew consisted of 70 people who were made to work from the very beginning of the film. Jarret further claimed that one of the most difficult shots in terms of complexity was the Whomping Willow scene where Ron’s car crashes. That particular scene contained a completely digital environment using computer graphics, including the area itself, the actors, and the tree. The company also used a customized tool called Cantilever which helped them effectively automate several processes including the animation of the tree.
John Williams was contacted once again to compose the main theme for the second time in a row. The soundtrack was released on 12th November 2002.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was the second consecutive film which became an absolute hit. The film broke multiple records and had the third-largest opening at the time. Moreover, the film topped the box office for two consecutive weeks, grossing over $879 million in total.
