I freaking loved this movie! It is one of the early highlights of 2024 for me and I am so glad that I made the effort to go and see this in the theatre. The thing about Lisa Frankenstein is that I have a feeling this is going to be a movie that is adored by a few, ignored by most, and then absolutely hated by the rest.

The Movie Review
This is written by Diablo Cody and I think that there are some real similarities here to her movie, Jennifer’s Body which I also love. Actually, I think that if you liked Jennifer’s Body, you will more than likely love this. However, if you did not like that movie, chances are, Lisa Frankenstein is not going to do it for you either.
Directorial Debut
A cool little bit of trivia and history that this movie has is that it is the directorial debut of Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late great Robin Williams. I remember getting a huge kick out of The Legend of Zelda commercials that Robin and Zelda Williams did together, it is awesome to see her start her career as a filmmaker out with a bang here.
The Storyline
The story on paper here is super simple. Set in the late 80s, we have a teenager called Lisa who is having a tough time. Lisa lost her mother to a brutal murder and her father has married this real piece of work called Jannet who brings with her a new sister for Lisa in the form of Taffy. Lisa has a really violent and angry side and that kind of makes me like her even more.
Unusual Friendship
Lisa is a kind of weird person with a really dark side. Lisa loves to hang out in the cemetery and she talks to this young man who died during the Victorian era, who is brought to life when lighting strikes his grave! He is just known as “Creature” and he is dirty, smelly, and missing several body parts, not to mention he cannot speak.
The Adventure Begins
The creature follows Lisa home and while freaked out at first, Lisa bonds with the creature and soon realizes that she can make him whole by giving him new body parts! Now prizes for guessing how Lisa and the Creature go about getting these new body parts! It is violent, crazy, and funny stuff and the movie just absolutely zoomed by for me.
Stellar Performances
Playing Lisa we have Kathryn Newton who is awesome. She is the perfect blend of crazy, angry, dark, and funny. Also, thanks to movies like Lisa Frankenstein, Paranormal Activity, and Freaky, Kathryn Newton is forging her own path as one of the best modern “scream queens” as I have enjoyed all of the horror stuff she has been a part of so far.
We also have Cole Sprouse as the Creature who does a great job with a role that is mostly physical. As well as Cole Sprouse and Kathryn Newton, Lisa Frankenstein has a great supporting cast with Liza Soberano as her stepsister Taffy and the never-aging beauty that is Carla Gugino as her stepmother.
Final Thoughts
I had so much fun with Lisa Frankenstein that I would love to go and see this again before it finishes its run. I can see this being a real cult classic in the same way that Jennifer’s Body is, where those who like it, really do love it! Do not miss out on this one, especially if you love movies that are dark and weird as you will have a lot of fun with this.
