Malignant (2021)

As a massive fan of James Wan’s horror movies, I must say Malignant is a movie I was very excited to check out. This is one of those movies that as well as being available in theatres it was also available on HBO Max as well. I have to say if you like his other work such as Dead Silence, Insidious, and The Conjuring, you will enjoy this.

The Movie Review

I am going to try my best to keep this as spoiler-free as possible. This is one of those movies where you want to know as little about it as possible going on. The movie has a great cast with Annabelle Wallis in the lead role as “Maddie”. She does a hell of a job in this movie and you never really know what the deal with her is until the big reveal.

So, what is the movie about? We have this woman called Maddie who is heavily pregnant at the start of the movie. She has an altercation with her husband that leads to her getting her head hit off the wall. While resting, she has a vision of this brutal murder and is then staked by a strange shadowy figure.

Maddie starts to see more and more brutal murders as if she is there when they are happening. A strange and evil twisted figure is committing these murders and it is like they are being performed for her. The cops of course think she is involved and her sister Sydney (played by the very likable, Maddie Hasson) is trying to help her and prove that there is something strange going on.

What I loved about Malignant is that at first, you think this is your standard James Wan paranormal horror movie. You think it is going to be something like Dead Silence, The Conjuring, or Insidious, and then it slaps you in the face with one of the best twists that I have seen in a James Wan horror movie!

The movie is very bloody and violent and it kept me guessing all the way until the big reveal. James Wan clearly had a lot of fun directing this and there are some great shots. There is one fantastic scene where Maddie is running through the house and it is all shot from a top-down perspective and it is a very cool way to convey how scared she was.

The whole final act of the movie was jaw-dropping. The wife and I literally had our mouths wide open as it was all taking place and it was awesome! I really hope that this gets a sequel at some point as I would love to see more of this world that James Wan has created here.

We had a great time watching this movie! Malignant is well worth your time checking out if you are a horror movie fan and especially if you have enjoyed James Wan’s other horror movies. We watched it on our TV, but I must admit that this is one that I wish I made the effort to go and see in the theatre… I had so much fun with this I may actually just do that!

Malignant is a 2021 horror movie directed by the Australian film director James Wan. Watch it now and learn what happened to Madison Lake.
