The Plot and the Review
Released on 16th July 2018, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again continues the story and is set a year after the demise of Donna. Sophie Sheridan, Donna’s daughter, prepares for a grand opening of her late mother’s hotel. Much to Sophie’s disappointment, two of her three fathers, Harry and Bill, fail to show up. In addition, Sophie is also seen going through marital issues with her own husband Sky.
Donna’s old bandmates, Tanya and Rosie show up for support meanwhile, Sophie visits her third father Sam. Running parallel to the present, are flashbacks of Donna’s memories which shows how she met her three lovers Sam, Bill and Harry. The first flashback displays how Donna meets Harry in 1979 as she is in Paris. However, after missing her boat to Kalokairi, she meets Bill whom then, she travels with to Greece.
Harry secretly follows Donna to Greece but is heartbroken to see her with Bill. In another flashback, Donna can be seen falling in love with Sam but asks him to leave after she finds a photo of him with her fiancée. The flashbacks also show Donna becoming pregnant with Sophie as she seems confused about who the father might be.
Meanwhile, in the present, the guests arrive and much to Sophie’s surprise, both her fathers along with Sky show up to support her in her time of need. The film ends with Sophie giving birth to a baby boy nine months later as the whole cast sings a song at Hotel Bella Donna with Donna’s spirit watching from above.
The Success of the Movie
After the success of the first film, the co-chairman of Universal Pictures announced that there could be a possible sequel. With the announcement of the film’s release, it was confirmed that the cast would reunite and Seyfried would return to play as Sophie.
Here We Go Again is sort of like a sequel-prequel hybrid as it portrays both the previous and forward events of the first film. Although the first edition of its iconic musicals, Here We Go Again also manages to impress the crowds by redoing some of the all-time fan favorites such as Dancing Queen and Waterloo. Adding to that, the film includes 18 new ABBA songs in the soundtrack album which was released on 13th July 2018 by Capitol and Polydor Records.
Overall, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again does really well to carry on the original film’s legacy. This edition hits viewers on a more personal level as it mostly relates to the mourning of Donna, the film’s most iconic character. In addition to the whole drama, the film once again manages to entertain its viewers by coming up songs to sing along too. The film is emotional yet entertaining, making it definitely worth a watch.
