There is no mistaking the fact that the My Big Fat Greek Wedding series is the baby of the very talented Nia Vardalos. I thought that the first movie was a lot of fun, a real guilty pleasure of mine and it was a massive hit. I remember going to see this with my girlfriend who is now my wife in the early days that we were dating and we both liked it and have watched it a few times over the years.

The Movie Review
I thought that the 2014 sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 had a lot of charm too. It was fun to see Toula and Ian many years later trying to raise their teenage daughter. I will admit, it was not as good as the first movie, but I still felt that it had charm and it was neat to revisit these characters so many years later in their life.

However, with My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, this is a case of going to the well one time too many. Nia Vardalos does not just write and star in this movie, she is also the director. Let me tell you, this movie is pretty bad, as a matter of fact, it is September as I write this and I am pretty sure this is the worst movie I have seen in a theatre this year!
Tribute to Michael Constantine
I will say that it is classy and a nice touch how this movie is dedicated to the very talented Michael Constantine who played Gus, the patriarch of the family. His passing in real life is actually part of the plot here. Gus has passed away and our huge loud and crazy Greek family is heading to Greece for a big family reunion.
Plot and Execution
The idea of Toula learning more about her father from his friends is good, but the execution of this movie is just so bad! This is a movie that is all over the place. It comes in at about 90 minutes and it honestly feels like it was rushed. So many things are just glossed over or forgotten and do not even get me started on the shoehorned-in “Greek wedding” that the movie has going on.
Humor and Charm
The humor and charm of the last two movies are just missing here. Most of the humor is just dumb. The family was loud and wild in the first two movies and it was part of what we loved about it. Toula accepting, loving, and dealing with her family is what it was all about here. Here, the family teeters on just being straight-up obnoxious and interfering in a more mean-spirited way.
Greek Scenery
One thing I will say about My Big Fat Greek Wedding that is a positive – it made me want to go to Greece. I will admit, I have no idea if this movie was actually shot in Greece, but this place looked like paradise! The movie looks gorgeous and my wife and I both said that we really need to take a trip to Greece one day.
Conclusion
Before I went to see My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, I asked myself numerous times if this was a movie that needed to be made. I think that the second movie was a fun follow-up and served as a great way to leave these characters. This movie just fell completely flat for me and I went in with not-so-high expectations, but I thought it may still be fun. Nope, this was just a real chore to sit through.
