It is always awesome when a new horror movie comes out during the Halloween season and I was legit excited to check out Never Let Go. Halle Berry is a fantastic actress who can pretty much do anything so I had no doubt that she was going to deliver a fantastic performance here.

The Movie Review
Never Let Go is a movie that I have seen very little about and there did not seem to be much of a promotional push for the movie. My theatre had one big poster up for it a few weeks back, but it was replaced by one for the new Venom movie. I saw one trailer for it before Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and I saw that same trailer on YouTube, but that is it as far as promotion goes. Granted, there may have been more out there, but that was certainly all I saw and I actively look for stuff about movies!
I have to be honest, had I been watching, Never Let Go at home on streaming, I possibly may have given up and turned it off. This is a very, very slow start with very little excitement at the beginning of the movie. The trailer actually tells you all you need to know about this world the movie is set in, but the movie takes like 30 minutes to do so and nothing really exciting happens.
Plot Overview
Halle Berry plays the role of Momma. Momma and her two kids, Nolan and Samuel live in the wilderness, alone after an apocalyptic evil has destroyed the world. This evil has some kind of tie to Momma’s family and her and her kids are on constant watch for this evil. The premise is honestly fantastic and in many ways, it kind of reminds me of the movie The Village.
They have a pretty brutal life in the woods. They scavenge to stay alive and if they leave the house, they have to be tethered to these ropes that come out of the basement as that is all that keeps them safe from the evil. The movie does a good job of making you question if this is real or if Momma is insane as she is the only one that can see this evil. Plus, as the kids grow, one of them stays devout to the stuff their mother says and the other one starts to question if this evil she keeps saying she is protecting them from is real.
Slow Start, Better Ending
The movie does pick up and I did find myself intrigued by the premise and I certainly wanted to know what was real and what was not real. In going back to The Village comparison, I will say that Never Let Go does have a much better ending and reveal than that movie did, 20 years later and I am still kind of mad about that.
I feel that we really needed to see more at the start of the movie. To be fair, I get what they were going for here, they wanted us to question what is real and leave it to our imagination. However, that opening 20 to 30 minutes is painfully slow, it just needed a little more excitement. I will say that the style of the movie is great, I love the dark and gloomy woods that the movie takes place in, it gives it a very creepy kind of vibe.
Final Thoughts
Hey, this is not a bad movie, but I do not think it will be one that I am in a hurry to watch again. I certainly would not blame you if you ended up screwing around on your phone while watching this when it comes out on streaming! I am not sure I would say that this is a movie you have to go and check out in the theatre, although if you do want to, I would suggest you do it sooner rather than later as I do not think this is going to have a long theatrical run.
