Boy, do I have a real horror classic for you today with 1982’s Poltergeist! I remember seeing this when I was way too young and it scared the hell out of me! Based on a story by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper, it is no wonder that this is a horror classic that many people still love to this day. I have the Poltergeist trilogy on Blu-Ray and my wife and I have had a lot of fun over the last week watching them all.

The Movie Review
The Story of the Freeling Family
This is the story of the Freeling family. There is Steven and Diane and they live with their kids, Dana, Robbie, and Carol Anne in a new housing community in California. The Freeling family is pretty “normal” however, one night Carol Anne starts talking to the static on the TV and after an earthquake, she delivers the iconic line of “they’re here”. You know, this is right up there with the most memorable lines from any horror movie. You say “they’re here” to someone and chances are they will know that it is from Poltergeist.
Supernatural Chaos Unleashed
The Freeling family is being messed with by ghosts. At first, the ghosts are just playing around with them, and the family is fascinated by them, but things soon turn dangerous and sinister. There is an epic scene where the tree outside the house comes to life, pulls Robbie out of his window and while this is going down, Carol Anne is sucked into the ghost dimension through the cupboard! I have seen this scene a million times, but it never gets any less awesome.
Carol Anne talks to the family through the TV and they call in some supernatural help to try and get her back, most notably medium Tangina Barrons who discovers that a dark entity known as The Beast wants to use Carol Anne’s life force. Tangina is played by Zelda Rubinstein and she is awesome.
The Fight to Save Carol Anne
The family are willing to do all that they can to get Carol Anne back and this means that Diane is going to have to go into the ghost dimension to get her back! Even though I have seen it before and I know what happens, when Diane first crosses over it gives you goosebumps as it is all done so well. You truly want her to get Carol Anne back and you also realize that she is a total badass in that she is willing to do this to get her daughter.
Why Poltergeist (1982) Stands the Test of Time
Poltergeist is regarded as a classic for a very good reason, this is a movie that as I write this is over 40 years old and it has aged like a fine wine. It is still just as creepy and just as much fun as it was when it was first released. I have always thought the sequels were fun too, but I do want to take a moment to mention the 2015 remake/reimaging as I also enjoyed that a great deal too.
Pop Culture Legacy of Poltergeist
You know a movie is iconic when it has been parodied to death over the years! My favorite one is The Simpsons which was part of the first Treehouse of Horror which is also a parody of The Amityville Horror. Also, the Spice Girls music video for Too Much features a fun parody of Poltergeist too. If you are in the mood for a classic and awesome horror movie, you can never go wrong with the original Poltergeist.
