Rocky II has to be regarded as one of the greatest sequels of all time. I know that there are some who prefer the first movie and that is fine, but for me, I have always liked Rocky II better. As I did with the original Rocky, while we will look at the plot of the movie, I want to more focus on my memories of the movie and how it had a lasting effect on me.

The Movie Review
Okay, so before we take a walk down my memory lane, let’s look at how things are going for The Italian Stallion in Rocky II. Rocky II picks up right after the first movie. Rocky and Apollo are in the hospital dealing with the aftermath of their fight. We find out that Rocky is in really bad shape and needs surgery to repair his eye.

Apollo’s Role and Impact
One of the things that often gets ignored with Rocky II is that I feel this is just as much Apollo’s movie as it is Rocky’s. Apollo is so mad that Rocky took him the distance and his ego will not allow him to believe that it was anything more than a fluke. I love the performance of Carl Weathers in Rocky II, it is truly some of the best stuff that he has ever done.
The Rematch and Dynamic
Rocky wants to retire and live a normal life, but financial problems and the constant jabs from Apollo eventually get him to accept the rematch. This is just such a great movie and I think that the way Rocky and Apollo are different is what makes them work so well together.
Epic Conclusion
The whole final act in Rocky II still to this day gives me goosebumps, the scene with Adrian in the hospital where she gives him her blessing to take the fight is just epic in every sense of the word. The fight between Rocky and Apollo is even more exciting than the first one and even though I have seen it a million times, I still find it amazing.
Personal Connection and First Viewing
In my Rocky review (which you need to read before going any further here) I talked about how watching Rocky with my dad was something that he was so excited for. Well, I never knew that there was a Rocky II until after we had seen Rocky 1. My dad did not tell me this was a series, but as soon as I heard that there was a Rocky II, I begged my dad to go and get it.
Anticipation and Excitement
Of course, this was exactly what he wanted to hear! We went to the video store on a Friday after school and I was so excited to watch Rocky II and eat all of the snacks that we had bought. I kept asking my dad question after question about Rocky II, but he would not budge! I never saw a trailer, I never knew anything about it all I knew was that it was a sequel to the epic movie I saw just a week prior.
Initial Impressions and Emotions
I still remember watching Rocky II for the first time. I was lying on my stomach on the rug, just so excited for it to start. What I mainly remember about Rocky II was that I had a real concern about Rocky and him getting into a fight again! The first time I saw Rocky II, I actually hated Apollo! I thought that he was just a jerk and while I did not want Rocky to get hurt, I wanted to see him kick Apollo’s butt!
A Timeless Classic
Rocky II is awesome in every way. I prefer it to the first movie, but I would not say by a ton, I mean, to be honest with you they are pretty much level the more that I think about. Rocky II is one of those movies that I feel like everyone should watch. I would be more shocked if someone had not seen Rocky, but I think like the original, it has aged perfectly and is just as good today as it was back in 79.
