I remember when the original Scary Movie was a huge deal! Coming hot on the heels of the monster success of slashers like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, the original Scary Movie caught lightning in a bottle. Then in 2001, just a year later, Scary Movie 2 managed the same trick again, and it seemed like the Wayans Brothers had this whole horror comedy parody thing on lockdown…. Until they had a falling out with the studio.

Franchise Fatigue & Dated References
To be honest with you, I actually thought that Scary Movie 3 was kind of fun, but with Scary Movie 4 and 5, I felt that the series had started to overstay its welcome. The thing with the series and even the first two awesome movies is that they really are products of their time. Not just with the humor, but the stuff they are parodying. For a teenager in 2026 to go back and watch the original, sure it will have some laughs, but they will miss out on many of the pop culture references from that time.
Return of the Wayans Brothers & Scream V Inspiration
When I heard that the series was coming back with Scary Movie 6 and that the Wayans Brothers were on board, I had very high hopes. Much like the original movie had Scream as its main inspiration, Scary Movie 6 does the same by having Scream V as its main source of inspiration. Of course, many other movies are parodied here, but the core of the story is themed around Scream V, and I would actually say the Halloween trilogy from the last few years is also another major source of inspiration.
Plot Setup & Return of Cindy Campbell
One of the things I love about the series is Anna Farris as Cindy Campbell. It is impossible not to love Anna Farris, and seeing her back in a major movie like this is awesome. Anyway, Cindy Campbell is now a recluse, but her daughter, Tuesday, is attacked by Ghostface, and her older sister, Sara, and her clear-as-day killer boyfriend Sara go to find her. This is pretty much the exact same setup as Scream V, and I thought that was hilarious.
Reuniting the Original Cast
From here, we get the gang back together in Cindy and her best friend Brenda, played by the awesome Regina Hall, and of course, we get her brother, Shorty, back as well as Ray, both being played by Marlon and Shawn Wayans. It is so much fun to see these characters back together. Also, in sticking with the Scream V comparison, we also get a younger set of actors to play the teenagers this time around, and the way that this all comes to a head is pretty fun.
Critical Reception vs. Fan Experience
I can see why Scary Movie 6, or just Scary Movie if you want to give it its official title, did not click with critics. At the end of the day, I went into this wanting to see a Scary Movie…. Movie, and that was exactly what I got. This was more of the same, but I mean that in a good way. If I am being honest, I do not think that they managed to catch the magic they had with the first two movies here, but I still had a fun time.
Final Thoughts
Look, the movie made me laugh on multiple occasions, I got a kick out of the various horror movie references and parodies, and it was fun seeing these characters back together after all this time. While I would not say that this was an amazing movie, it pretty much gave me what I wanted and what I expected from it. It was loud, obnoxious, over the top, stupid, and I am sure to some people, it was even offensive, but that is what this series has always been about.
