Even as someone who really liked the original Practical Magic, when I heard that Practical Magic 2 was going to be a thing, nearly 30 years later, I thought that it was a very unnecessary sequel. Well, I am super ignorant, and not only did I not know the original Practical Magic is based on a book, but that book actually had a sequel, which, from what I understand, is the basis for this sequel. Plus, this being set so long after the original makes perfect sense for the story.

The Movie Review: Overcoming the Doubts
Now, I was not able to go and see Practical Magic 2 until it had been out for a little over a week, and by then, I had heard mixed to negative things about it, and I was really wondering if I should bother seeing it in the theatre. Well, I remembered that the original had kind of mixed reviews when it first came out too, and over time, it has become a real Halloween must watch for many people.
Deepening the Lore: The Curse That Never Left
Well, I am glad I did, as I loved Practical Magic 2, and in watching it so close to the original (for about the 10th time) I actually think I liked Practical Magic 2 better than the first one! The movie starts by giving us a bit more backstory on Marie Owens, the ancestor of Sally and Gillian who started this curse, a curse which they thought they had broken, but turns out that was not the case.
A New Generation: Family Secrets and Shattered Trust
The man who Sally fell in love with died after they got married, and Sally decided to cast one last spell to make her kids forget all about magic so that she could shield them from the same hurt that she had felt. Well, now all grown up, Sally’s kids, Kylie and Antonia, are living good lives without magic, and Kylie has fallen in love with a guy called Gideon, who is played by the super likable Xolo Maridueña, who you probably know better as Miguel from Cobra Kai.
No spoilers here, but Kylie, Antonia, and Gillian are all called back to the Owens house in Massachusetts, and as Kylie has actually fallen in love with Gideon, he is hit by a car and ends up in a coma, another victim of the Owens curse! This leads to Sally coming clean, Kylie being mad as hell that their mother has lied to her for all these years, and it is just a big mess of family drama.
Gothic Mystery in England: The Raven Book
To make matters worse, a mysterious raven book is found by Aunt Jet, and this book may have the secret to break the Owens curse, and this sends Kylie to England to try and make this happen. Here, they meet a male witch and find out even more about the history of the Owens family. I found this to be a ton of fun, and it did keep me guessing in regard to who would and could not be trusted. Plus, the setting was awesome, very witchy and gothic, which was something that I got a huge kick out of.
Sisterly Magic Never Fades: Bullock and Kidman Return
Adding in some extra characters was a lot of fun, but the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman has not diminished after nearly 30 years at all. The way that they bicker is just so much fun, and you know that they will make up and be super close again. Actually, the whole tight-knit family that is the Owens clan is something that I really do like a great deal.
Final Verdict: A Worthy Return for the Owens Clan
I had a blast watching this one and the just over two hour run time flew by. I kind of wish that they released this just a couple of weeks later, as it would have been really fun to see this in the theatre during Halloween season. From what I have read, while not amazing, it is doing decently well at the box office, and I could see this really catching on when it hits streaming, so I would not be against another outing for the Owens family at all.
