Solo Mio

Despite loving Kevin James since the days of King of Queens, I honestly did not have high expectations at all for Solo Mio. The trailer that I saw for this was kind of strange, as I was not sure if this was a straight drama or a romantic comedy. I would say that it lies somewhere in the middle. I was hooked on this in a way that is hard to explain. I cannot for sure say why I loved this movie the way I did, but it just clicked with me right from the start.

The Movie Review

This is brought to us by Angel Studios (Sound of Freedom, Sound of Hope, The King Kings, Cabrini), directed by the Kinanne brothers team. Solo Mio is a story about having your heart shattered into a million pieces and then putting it back together again. Look, this is about as predictable as it comes, and even if you just watch the trailer, I am certain that you will know exactly what is going to happen.

However, the execution here is so well done, and Kevin James’s Matt is such a likable character, he is impossible not to like. Plus, the Italian setting of the movie is gorgeous and like a character in itself. I wonder how many people watch this and then dream of taking a vacation to Italy, because I know I sure as hell did!

Solo Mio Plot Breakdown: Kevin James in an Emotional Italian Adventure

Set in Italy, Matt is due to marry his long-time love, Heather; however, she dumps him at the altar, leaving him a note explaining why she could not get married. Talk about being devastated, Matt is absolutely crushed, but rather than just heading back to the USA. Matt decides that he is going to do all the activities that he and Heather had booked to do together, but now on his own.

Cast and Romance: Kevin James and Nicole Grimaudo Deliver

Despite being awkward at first, Matt bonds with married couples and does have a good time. However, things change for the better when Matt meets the gorgeous Mia, played by Nicole Grimaudo, in a local café, and they hit it off right away. Matt does not tell her his story right away, not because he is trying to hide anything, but you can tell that he is still hurt and embarrassed.

Why Solo Mio Is a Feel-Good Romantic Comedy Worth Watching

Look, you know where this story is going a mile away. But for me, it was more about Matt finding himself and becoming happy again, than him getting with this new gorgeous Italian chick that he met. Sometimes movies try way too hard to have twists and turns, and they suffer as a result. For me, Solo Mio is a prime example of a movie that is predictable, but it gives the audience exactly what they want, and there is no way that you do not have a huge goofy smile on your face when the credits start.

Final Verdict: A Surprising Romantic Drama Success

As I said, I did not have the highest of expectations for Solo Mio, but this gets going right from the start, and thanks to how likable Kevin James is, you are hooked. If you want a movie that is a drama with a little romantic comedy sprinkled on top, this is perfect. I am so glad I watched this. I was actually going to skip it and not bother!
