Just like when I was excited for Scream 4 back in 2011, I was once again pumped that ten years later (roughly) Scream was once again back. Is there another franchise that has 10 years between installments like Scream does? Anyway, this was just such a fun movie and a real love letter to the franchise and an amusing look at today’s internet culture when it comes to movies.

The Movie Review
I watched this with a friend of mine and before he had asked, “do I need to watch the other movies first?” I would say that at the very least you need to have seen the original Scream before watching … Scream, I wish they just called it Scream 5! You will have more appreciation if you have seen all four, but it mainly ties into what went down in the first movie.
I do not want to go too deep into the movie for fear of giving spoilers. Speaking of spoilers, before the movie started, Ghostface appeared on the screen and warned against giving spoilers which I thought was hilarious. Anyway, the movie is set in Woodsboro and teenager, Tara Carpenter is attacked by Ghostface and left for dead.
Her teenage friends, Amber, Wes, Martha, and Chad rally around her in the hospital as her mother is out of town. They call her estranged sister, Sam. Sam and her boyfriend, Richie rush to Woodsboro to help Tara. Of course, once she arrives, all hell breaks loose, and once again, Woodsboro is under the terror of Ghostface.
Sam and Richie go to good old Sherriff Dewey and seeing David Arquette in this role again was also awesome. However, Dewey is no longer the sheriff, but he still agrees to help them catch this new Ghostface. This also brings Gale Weathers and of course, Sidney Prescott back to Woodsboro to help so we have the original three back taking on Ghostface!
It is so awesome that they got the old cast back for this, but they blend in very well with the new cast. Speaking of which, Martha gives this awesome monologue about “requels” which was a major highlight of the movie and perfectly described how some obsessive fans can be these days.
Scream moves at a great pace and I think that the way it handles the whole “who is the killer?” is done very well. You think you know who the killer is, but at the same time, you are never 100 percent sure. The movie is just so much fun and I do have to say that this is the most brutal movie in the Scream franchise!
This kicks the gore up several notches over what we got in Scream 4. Scream 4 was fine, but this takes the violence to a whole new level. There are some great and wince-inducing practical effects in this movie. You want to see it in all its gory detail, but at the same time, you want to look away!
Overall, Scream is a great example of how you do a “requel”. The way it tied into the original Scream was very clever, but at the same time, it still offered some fun new ideas and characters. It would work great as a way to bring the series to a close, however, if ten years from now they wanted to make another one, I would be cool with that!
