She Said

I had been following the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse story pretty much as soon as it dropped and I knew it would eventually be turned into a movie. She Said is a pretty brutal retelling of the way that this horrible excuse for a man would pray on women. While it is clearly not an “enjoyable” movie, She Said is a very powerful movie and one that left me lost for words once it had finished.

The Movie Review

The more I think about it, the more I feel, She Said is one of the most compelling movies of 2022. The movie is basically a retelling of the book that was put out by reporters,  Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey. These two ladies are played by Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan and they are both wonderful.

I am sure that pretty much everyone at this point knows the story of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. He was a powerful figure in Hollywood and he would use his power to prey on women. It is a truly sickening thing and at the time it was all revealed, I was disgusted and this movie does a great job of making you feel those same feelings.

Our two reporters get wind of some seriously messed up stuff that he had done. They start digging and find years and years of stories about the way he has abused women for years. Not just people working in the office, but talented and well known Hollywood actresses as well! It is actually insane what this man was able to get away with for so long.

The movie is about these two women trying to get those who have been victims of him to come and speak out about it. The Rose McGowan story here is truly heartbreaking as are all the stories of the women that he prayed on. However, the way that they are able to stand up, point their finger at him, tell their story and get their power back is quite inspirational stuff.

It is not just the work that these ladies did to get this article published and help these women come forward that is powerful in this movie. We also find out about the aftermath where this article gave more women power to stand up and say “me too” and it is sickening just how many victims this man had!

If you followed the story when this scandal broke closely, I am not sure that there will be anything here that surprises you. However, I am glad that they did not really embellish anything here and played it straight and kept it as close to the source material as possible. I think to have added anything to the story for the sake of “drama” would have cheapened what they did here.

I do have to say that She Said is not the kind of movie you watch if you want a good time and want to have fun. It is a heartbreaking story, but I also think there is some real inspiration here too and I love the way that they showcased the bravery of these women. If you were someone that was interested in this story, I am certain you will find this retelling fascinating.
