You have to be a real monster to at the very least not have a smile on your face while watching Shrek! The first two movies were absolute classics, so much so that a third movie was a no brainer. With as beloved as the first two were though, Shrek the Third has some big ogre-sized shoes to fill!

The Film Review
So in a movie franchise that is all about fairy tale stories, what is the story this time around? Well after the death of King Harold, Fiona and Shrek are tasked with ruling the kingdom. This freaks the green ogre out big time and he finds out there is another heir out there, Arthur or as Shrek calls him Artie. The green monster, Puss in Boots and Donkey head out on a quest to Artie’s boarding school to bring him to the throne.
That is not the only plot that is running through Shrek the Third. The ogre also finds out he is going to be a dad which also freaks him out. In addition to this that dastardly Prince Charming is cooking up a plan for him to become the king and he calls in the help of a bunch of Far, Far Away’s most awful villains to help him.
The story is actually quite good and I do feel that it actually appears that there is more at stake in this movie than there was in the previous two. However, I do also feel that the movie is lacking a little bit of the heart that the Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004) had. This is not to say that the story here is bad or anything like that, it just had super high expectations to unfairly live up.
Overall it is a story that has danger as well as some laughs. For me the star of the movie is once again Donkey, how can you not love Donkey? Eddie Murphy has played so many iconic roles, but Donkey is sure to be the one he is most remembered for. I also loved much of the supporting cast. I have always thought that Pinocchio in the Shrek movies was absolutely hilarious and that is the same here.
As well as Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas and Eddie Murphy leading the charge. Shrek the Third introduces a couple of new fun voices. Justin Timberlake plays the super nerdy and reluctant king to be, Artie. Eric Idle plays Merlin and he is one of my favorite parts of the movie as he is so funny.
By the time the film was released we had two awesome movies, a ton of merch, video games, books and a ton of other Shrek related goodness. So Shrek the Third always had a lot to live up to. Do I think it is as good as the first two movies? I would have to say no, but the film guarantees a really fun time and the cast is just as funny here as they have been in the other Shrek movies.
